Thrifty Projects for 2014

Thanks for sharing!

We are a week into 2014! I really don't make formal resolutions. I think about things I want to do better…you know …the usual:  lose weight, eat better, read more, knit more, be more patient, get organized…..

My biggest goal right now is to get my thrifty finds gathering dust in the garage and stashed everywhere new life!

The biggest projects in line by far are these gems! Here are my Thrifty Projects for 2014!

French Buffet to be finished in ASCP from Our Southern Home

We just picked up this French buffet that is over 50 years old up from Craig's List over the weekend. It is so stinking heavy, and I am just in love with it! I am excited to be sharing it soon in its finished state, back story and new location in our home. I've been working on it this week. It was $99, down form the original $400 asking price. Believe me…the $99 was a steal!

Up next are 3 pieces that will round out an upstairs reading nook on the landing.

chair to slip cover

I bought this chair for $7.50 a while back from a local thrift store. It is upholstered + has a zippered slip cover. It is sturdy and comfy! I plan to paint the exposed wood and drum roll…..attempt a slip cover. Notice that I said attempt! I hope you will follow along as I tackle something I've wanted to try for years, but too scared to jump right in!

The next 2 pieces were bought in December.

French Leather chair to repaint from Our Southern Home

This French styled chair with the leather seat was $40 from the Restore. I thought I was going to get into a sparring match over it! I'm just going to paint the wood. I'm not sure about the leather yet. It is really in excellent shape. In the house it looks more neutral and champagne colored. I may just leave the leather and skip upholstery. If I do the upholstery route…its will be a DIY. The $8 framed art is history. The frame has been painted and the insert turned into a chalkboard. I'll be sharing it soon!

Ottoman to Reupholster or slip cover from Our Southern Home

Lastly, is the round ottoman for $10.50 from Goodwill. Again, I'll be either upholstering or doing a slip cover. I have sewn a box pleated slip cover before and it wasn't that bad. Josie is checking it out!

You know I prefer the French Country use of color in our home. This upstairs landing area will probably be my little contribution to the neutral/white decor world! I'm sure there will be a little color pop in it though!

2014 Upcoming Projects from Our Southern Home

It is my goal to have all 4 of these pieces complete this year! I have a little less than 12 months! I think it will be easier than losing weight! I think the French leather chair will be next!

Next week I'll be participating in this tour party!

    1. Thanks, Barbara!! I actually plan to work on it tomorrow for a post next week. That’s a great idea!! XXOO Christy

  1. Always inspired by your finds. In the part of California I live in Thrift Stores are no longer Thrifty. May sell for less than resale but always ask too much. It’s big business here.

    1. Thanks so much, Cheryl!! It is always such fun to find that deal! Shopping my own stash right now to clear it out! Fun!! ~Christy

  2. There you go, inspiring me!! Looks like you have some terrific projects ahead and I can’t wait to see the results. I think that now I am sufficiently driven to tackle my two hideous cabinets I picked up for a song last year!! They are perfect pieces for the spaces I have them in, but the finishes need to be addressed with some chalk paint techniques. Now, to pick the colors…. As for your projects, can I tell you how much I love the French buffet?

    1. Thank you so much, Heather!!! Good luck on your cabinets. I bet they will turn out great! I finished the buffet and I love it! My husband didn’t want me to distress it so I didn’t. We’ve been living with it a few weeks, and I’m going to go and distress it lightly on the edges so that wood comes through. I’ll be sharing hopefully next week. Going to do that French leather chair next! So excited you stopped by!!! Have a wonderful week!!! ~Christy

  3. I can’t wait to see your finished projects! You have some great finds. We just got a booth at Apple Dumplin’ in downtown Anderson after being on the wait list for a long time and I’m looking forward to finding some good pieces to transform. You’ve inspired me! Maybe I will run into you at GW one day!

    1. That is so cool, Lisa! Congrats!!!! That is where I bought my vintage tool box that I did the font transfer on! I would love to do a booth one day. You’ll have to give me the ins and outs! Let me know when you get it opened! XXOO Christy

  4. All such great finds!! I just got a chair this past weekend…I don’t sew, so no slip cover for mine! I am cleaning it and going to paint it with Chalk Paint. We’ll see how that goes. 😉
I can’t wait to see yours all done and complete!!

  5. I have confidence that you will do a great job on your wonderful finds.

And I have a kitty that looks like Josie, only she is Sadie Lady.

  6. Christy you found some great pieces. Love that buffet and the ottoman with the kitty hanging out. So cute!! Can’t wait to see the transformations!!

  7. Christy,
That buffet or dresser is beautiful and it looks like it was well cared for. Such bargains you aced! I am looking for a comfy chair for my bedroom to sit and read in. I’ll keep my eye out for bargains at several places. Habitat for Humanity sometimes gets some nice piece in but is about 13 miles away and we don’t go in that direction but probably every 6 mo. SA used to get some great 1970-1980’s furniture pieces in but I think they must have lost their lease and are moving elsewhere or closing up for good at that location. Stock was way down with exception of clothing the last time we stopped by, and one of the employees was scrapping lettering off the door and a lot of furniture seemed to be going out the door. GW sometimes gets some good pieces in but mostly “junk” Humane Society has a great thrift store and everything is organized so well and clean. They get some nice furniture but it doesn’t stay there long before it is sold. We donate our goodies there anymore and buy when something hits our eye that we can’t resist.

What will you use that piece of furniture for..media storage or china, etc? I bought a beautiful ottaman at Humane Society for $45 and it had to be part of a set before and an expensive set, you can tell by the fabric and workmanship of piece. It blends in nicely with my burgungy wing back chairs for living room.
Hurry up and do that buffet and dresser..can’t wait to see the finished project. I know what you mean by that dresser being heavy. I got the urge last week to try to re-arrange my husband’s desk..it is solid cherry and even the movers complained 9 years ago when they moved it here. I was only able to pick each end up about 1/4-/1/2 in. to put furniture gliders under it and I had to pick up 4 corners by myself. DH can’t help me because of his Jan.2013 back surgery. I arranged it caty-corner in the office and it gives me more room to maneuver in my computer area. We share the office and he rarely comes in here anymore since I’ve taken over all the financial dealings, etc.

Today I will go through the filing cabinet and declutter the files, shredding stuff that we don’t need to keep anymore. Trying to get ready for income tax preparation next month. Files are so heavy and full that it’s affecting the opening of the drawers. Time to clean out!

I love hearing from you!
