This month's challenge was Clay Pots. I was a little stumped at first. All I could envision was the precious little pots my kids came home with when they went to Mom's Morning Out with thumb prints all over them. I still have those precious works of art in my craft room to enjoy when I'm in there sewing.

Sometimes I wander around the craft store looking until creativity comes to me.

I changed my mind a few times on this project.

I decided to make an inexpensive centerpiece by applying a weathered paint treatment to clay pots to create a striking topiary.

It all started with 3- 4.5 inch clay posts from Hobby Lobby for $1.37 each.

I finally decided that I really needed a change on the kitchen table. I wanted something simple and easy for summer.

Sorry my paint pots look a little messy. I love American Decor Chalky FInish Paints. They are affordable, come in small sizes and are readily available at craft stores and Home Depot. (not a sponsored post) I decided to use the 2 colors Relic and Everlasting.

I painted 1 coat of Relic on each pot with a foam brush. By the time I was finished with all three, the first was dry and ready for the white coat.

I worked fast, so no pictures of the dry brush process, but here is how you do it. It's easy peasy……promise!

  • Barely dip your bristle brush in the white paint
  • Blot and wipe it on a paper towel so there is no excess
  • Then brush horizontally around the pot.
  • I actually did this 3 times to get a lighter look. It dried quickly.
  • Then I applied DecoArt's matte varnish to seal.

You are left with a weathered finish perfect for that farmhouse, cottage or beachy look.

I purchased the large faux boxwood balls from Hobby Lobby. Here's a hint. They are kept year around in the floral department. BUT a nice clerk told me the same large ones were in the spring section which was marked down 40% off. I got them for $4.79 each.

Not bad for $6.16 each! I love the simplicity. The runner was a find from Tuesday Morning this winter. They usually have great linens.

This is a great idea if you are staging your home for sale as well. It's a simple, clean look.

Great thing about these is that I can easily move them to other areas of our home. I can remove the faux boxwood ball and use it in other containers….the possibilites are endless.
