Christmas Tree Basket

Thanks for sharing!

Today is Thrift Store Makeover Challenge Day with my girls! We moved it up a week because of Thanksgiving.

Monthly thrift store challenge with top bloggers!

I am really excited about my project. I'm sharing how I turned a thrift store basket into a tabletop Christmas tree stand.

Christmas Tree Basket DIY by Our Southern HomeTree basket 2

It started out as a sad, dirty and chipped little basket. Little did this fella know that he'd soon have a spot front and center with our Christmas home.

I simply diluted Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Pure White. I added a heaping teaspoon of paint to about 1/4 cup of water. Stir really well. Then using a wide, flat artist brush, I hastily painted it on working in sections. Then with paper towels, wipe off. You are left with this fabulous weathered look.

Now, I'd love to go back and permanently mount the base of my tree in concrete in a plastic pot that could easily fit in the basket. BUT when you are in pajamas all day, the last thing you want to do is change and head out to the home improvement center. So as any good DIYer would do, you make do! I simply cut styrofoam that I had on hand. Place the tree in the center. The I continued to wedge it around until it was secure. I'd never do this with a large tree. This one is small and it worked.

What do you think? That sweet little basket is now a beauty! I adore the look. My teen daughter even walked in from school and was like, “That looks amazing.”  I'm slowly getting the house ready for Christmas. I haven't come across my tree toppers yet, so I'll eventually be adding one here.

To hide the Styrofoam, I worked in 2 toile napkins around the base to hide it.

Looks great with my roosters from this challenge.

Since the tree is temporarily in the basket, I'll get to enjoy it year round!

  1. I simply adore the little rooster Christmas tree! The basket really makes it even more charming! Quick question, do you happen to remember where you found your cushions for your counter bar stools? They are lovely!!

    1. Thanks so very much! The cushions are 16 years old and were custom made. Pottery Barn and Ballard have great options.

  2. Christy LOVE this and the basket adds such whimsy and French to the tree. I’m doing something different for our larger tree this year.

  3. I really, really like this tree with the wreath and the white hen and rooster. The only thing that would make it better is if the hen and rooster were red!!! (Just my opinion.)

    1. Thanks so much! Red would be beautiful on the roosters, but wouldn’t match my daily decor. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

    1. Thanks so much! I probably wouldn’t do a kitchen tree, but found those toile roosters so many years ago and they are perfect in this spot. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  4. The basket really completes the look! I think I will do the small one for the bedroom this way. A very nice finishing touch! Oh, and one more thing, I adore the rooster ornaments! Did you DIY plastic animal figures or purchase? I would love to get my hands on a set!

      1. Thanks!! The white roosters are from the thrift store. I painted them white with spray paint. The rooster ornaments are from an after Christmas sales about 12 years ago at Belk.

    1. Thanks so much! The rooster ornaments are ceramic, but your DIY sounds perfect! I bought them about 12 years ago in an after Christmas sale at Belk. They are a favorite of mine. 🙂

I love hearing from you!
