Decorative Key Makeover

Thanks for sharing!

Get inspired with this thrift store decor makeover challenge series to decorate your home on a budget .

If you don't already, I highly encourage you to shop thrift stores to decorate your home. I'm a true believer that a home can be beautiful with the marrying of old and new to create a warm and inviting home.

Home decor doesn't have to break the bank!

With a little paint, elbow grease and creativity, you can make someone's castoff your treasure!

I purchased this large key for $1.99 at Goodwill. It's really not that bad, just a bit too gold for my tastes though.  Nothing a little paint can't remedy.

I pulled out my Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Pure White. Since there was small detail, I used a flat artist brush. I used a dry brush technique.

This took no time to paint.

To dry brush, dip your paint brush in the paint, wipe it on the side to remove excess. Then use a paper towel to blot it on. You want very little paint on your brush. Then sweep the brush across the top of the design. Do not try to get in all the crevices. This allows some of the gold to peek through.

This effect really softens the look. You could have painted it all white, but I like the vintage look it has now.

Here is up close detail of the lion. It now looks a bit weathered and vintage. It looks like it originally came from the 70s. It could be hung on the wall with the attached hook. I just applied one coat of paint. I didn't even wax or seal. I just left it like this. I didn't want any other shine coming through other than the gold.

The key finally inspired me to update my mantel for spring. The chalkboard frame has become a bit of a standard piece here. It was a thrift store piece of art.

The silver urn was also a thrift store find…one of my favorites. I don't normally use faux flowers, but this lavender from Hobby Lobby looks so realistic. I simply nestled a neutral napkin inside to anchor the lavender. You can see it peeking above the rim. It's also a way to add a bit of texture.
