Mod Podge Rabbit Mount

Thanks for sharing!

Welcome to my new WordPress site!  I have moved here from Blogger.  My blog is still being tweaked, but the address is still the same!  Hopefully, the migration will all be completed soon!  WordPress is definitely a learning experience.

You may or may not be in on the faux antler craze, but I am loving it!  Today I am going to show you how I made a Mod Podge Rabbit Mount for my 14-year-old daughter's room.

Disclaimer:  No bunnies were harmed in any way for this project.

How in the world did this project come about?  I have this little habit that drives my husband crazy.  I stuff things in the attic that may one day be of use!  Lately, I've been pulling quite a few goodies out.  This little rabbit is part of a set.  They were originally used in my daughter's nursery as window treatment finials. How could I ever get rid of these?

Materials Needed

decorative wood piece from Hobby Lobby ($2.99)

1 sheet of scrapbook paper

plain paper for template

scissors and pencil

Mod Podge

foam brush

drill

decorative object for center

paint and brush

This really is a simple project.  The first thing that was done was the painting of the wood piece by my daughter.  She painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk paint in Old White.  Any kind of paint would work….even craft paint.  So little of it shows.

Then I took a piece of printer paper and placed it on the top of the wood piece.  The piece has a carved edge so I placed the paper on top.  Holding the paper firmly in place, I traced the entire top with my fingers pushing the paper around the edges to make an imprint.  I then traced it with pencil and cut it out.

In this photo, you can see what I mean by the curved edges.

Apply 1 coat of Mod Podge to the back of the paper and the top of the wood.  Carefully position your paper on top and line it up.

This part is very important.  Use some sort of flat edged tool like a pot scraper to press the paper out so that there are no air bubbles.  I used a tool from a Word Walls kit.

Allow this to dry before proceeding.  I waited about 30 minutes.  Then I applied 2 more coats of matte Mod Podge drying in between coats.  I coated all areas of the front of the board including the edges. (not the back)

I took some yarn from my knitting stash and created a cross, taping the yarn to the back.  I marked the center point.  This is where I drilled my hole.  The finial already has a screw attached to it.  Now, if I were to do this again with the other rabbit….I'd probably drop the hole down a bit more off-center.

I simply screwed the finial into the board and I was finished!

Let your creative juices flow……You may not have a rabbit, but maybe you have an object that you could do something similar.  I think an initial letter in place of the rabbit would be adorable or even a small airplane!

This is a before of the hanging of the rabbit mount and  the plates.  I made cut out templates and taped them up to play around with the arrangement.  I then hung it all with Command Strips.  Sadly, I broke one of the plates from our trip to Germany.  I am quite the klutz!  I was a bit disappointed. 🙁

Basically, a gallery wall has been created over her desk area.  If we ever have a desire to reuse the finals for window treatments, they would simply unscrew with no damage.

This study area is still a work in progress, but oh so close.   This area was created with thrift store finds, this lovely Craig's List desk and discount store items.  The cat painting was actually in my childhood room and was vintage then!

There are more posts to come on this area!  Thanks for stopping by!  I'd love for you to follow Our Southern Home.

  4. woohoo! You made it to WP! Her room is so cozy! The bunny would be sweet in my baby girl’s room. We did all pink, cream, and light brown in there.

    1. Thanks so much, Amanda! Would you believe the drapes are from her original French door in our old house from her nursery? When we moved to this house….we had to rework it into 4 panels, add her plaid crib skirt fabric to the bottoms of the panels to add length. The new fabric is on the valance. I really wanted her nursery to carry her through the teen years. I’ll be sharing her entire room soon! Your daughter’s room colors are beautiful!

  5. What a great idea! If you remember where you got the plate, I’ll be glad to go and check on getting a replacement.

    1. Elizabeth, you are so sweet! I got it in Berlin. Luckily, they were not too expensive. Set of 4 seasons plate by Royal Doulton. I broke the pretties summer one. They are just so pretty! If you see one….yes, please grab it. I should probably look on EBay, too.
