Patio Furniture Makeover
**This post was sponsored by DecoArt. All opinions are mine**
About 15 years ago, I purchased an antique patio set from a sweet little lady pre-Craigslist….you know when you picked up a newspaper and scoured the classifieds.
It was all rusty and really needed help. I searched high and low and finally found someone who would sand blast it. That cost $100. All in all, a pretty sweet deal.
I sprayed it all black with a high quality black paint suitable for iron with an electric sprayer. You can see part of it on the screened porch HERE. The table and chairs have been on the front porch.
It has been 15 years since this set was painted. It has held up really well in that it has always been covered from the elements. It really looks great as is, but really needed a new coat of paint. I wanted something different that would look nice with my existing colors on the porch and the cushions I recovered last year. I felt like the black on the table got a bit lost with the dark green shutters and black iron railings.
To prep for paint, all I did was give it a really good cleaning. It was coated with all the winter grunge and yellow pollen. Let it dry thoroughly before applying paint. I brought my pieces inside to paint. The pollen is still too bad to chance the yellow stuff getting on my wet paint. It gave me a chance to catch up on Grey's Anatomy.
I applied 3 coats of Americana Decor Chalky Finish paints in Everlasting. You will notice that I used a flat, wide artist brush. With the intricate detail of the table and chairs, it gave me better control of the application. This paint is fabulous. No priming or sanding was necessary. It really covered over the black well.
After the paint had dried, I did not apply a wax since this was for outdoor use. Instead I used Americana Decor Soft-Touch Varnish. It can be applied indoors or out as a sealer. It really gives a luxurious, soft-to-the-touch, durable polyurethane finish. It is scuff and scratch resistant.
This was my first time using the varnish, and I can't wait to use it again. It as well as the paint has no odor and cleans up with water. It is thinner that the paint. It applies so fast and glides like you wouldn't believe. I applied 1 coat again with my artist brush.
When painting like this with an artist brush, I suggest cleaning your brush every so often. You do get build up with it being small.
Are you ready for the after?
I can't believe the transformation. I'll be sharing it on the porch soon. The porch has not been pressure washed with the layers of pollen. (Hubby cleaned if for me while I was at the grocery store after I had already taken my photos….so sweet).
Don't get me wrong. I really like the black, but this will really stand out on the porch now. It will be a nice change. It just says hello spring and summer!
I am thankful that my peonies are in bloom to share them with you…..my absolute favorite flower.
I can't wait to style it on the front porch!
I used 1-1/2 pots of Everlasting paint and a 1/4 of the varnish. I have so enjoyed the many projects that I have completed with Americana Decor Chalky Finish paints. Not only is it affordable, but you don't have to go to a specialty store to purchase it. You can purchase it at Michaels, Jo-Ann, Hobby Lobby and Home Depot. Visit the DecoArt Chalky Finish website for more chalk paint ideas and inspiration.
I can just see me carrying the lap top to the porch to work in the early morning hours this summer. What do you have that you'd love to try Americana Decor Chalky Finish paints on? Visit the DecoArt Chalky Finish website for more chalk paint ideas and inspiration.

Your patio set look gorgeous after the makeover. It look so bright and great under the sunlight. Thanks for sharing your story Christy. Now I know what to do with my grandpa’s patio, it will be wasted if i let it rusted in the basement.
Good job Christy! Funny how a change of color can change the whole mood. Thanks for sharing and putting new ideas in my head 🙂

Nancy
It looks so bright and fresh! Like a totally different table! It’s amazing what a little paint can do!
I just re-did a Windsor back rocker I inherited from my grandmother using Americana Chalky Finish in Romance and the Deep Brown wax. You’re 100% right about the great coverage you get and the ease in applying. It also dries super fast, there’s no worry about smells and cleans up like a dream. I loved it so much I went out and bought 5 or 6 other colors. There’s nothing in my house that’s safe from this paint right now!
It’s beautiful! I like it all in white. And the cushions are a pretty green.
Thanks so much, Cyndee!
