Vintage Farmhouse Ikea Rast Hack

Thanks for sharing!

This is a sponsored post by Belwith Hickory Hardware. I was provided with the chest, hardware and gifts card for supplies. All opinions are my own. The hardware rocks this Ikea Rast!

When I first looked at what I had to work with, I wasn't sure what I'd gotten myself into. The Ikea Rast is very plain and basic coming unfinished. How in the world could I make this fit my French Country Vintage Farmhouse decor? I thought…….

My hubby felt very confident that I could come up with a plan.

Then I came up with a plan…a drawing, and a list. Then off we went to the home improvement center. Once we put the legs and top on, I knew I was in love.

While I was busy decorating for Christmas, my hubby and my daughter got all sneaky on me and put it together. It was a million bits and pieces. This is the first Ikea piece that we have had that required assembly. My closest IKEA is 2 hours away. I've only been twice.

Pine is a soft wood, so the screws were really easy to sink into the wood. Then I used wood filler to fill them in. Let that dry and sand smooth.

Prepped and ready for paint. I painted 3 coats of a creamy white that I had on hand in a latex satin. I did sand between coats lightly.

I knew that I wanted to use this piece in our staircase so I needed to add a bit of height. It's an easy fix by adding 2×4 boards under the chest to attach these feet from my local home improvement store.

You will attach a straight top plate to the 2×4 boards underneath. Then you have a secure surface to screw in the legs.

Your local home improvement stores will cut your boards for you. I wanted a plank top for the top. You will need the following for the plank top:

  • 2- 1×4 boards pine stain grade cut the width of the chest.
  • 1- 1×6 board pine stain grade cut the width of the dresser.
  • 76 inches of pine stain grade 1 inch lattice

Stain the boards first. I used Dark Walnut. I recommend a pre-stain conditioner on raw wood.

Nail the boards to the top of the chest using brad nails. Countersink the holes and fill with wood filler.

Attach the lattice around the edge of the boards.

After it was finished, I felt it looked a bit plain with the lines of the chest. You know I have a slight obsession with French grain sack stripes. Since I was going for a vintage farmhouse look, I decided to add the stripes. I painted them in a dark sage green in latex satin that I also already had. Quickly remove the tape as soon as you are finished painting.

The part that really completes the look is this fabulous Hickory Hardware.  They have such a wonderful selection that I had a hard time deciding.

I ended up going with this French country style knob. I was so surprised at how expensive they look. They are high quality at a very affordable price! My selection was less than $5 per knob! That's a great buy for this look!

You will notice that if you look at the before that we added a panel to the bottom under the drawer. This was so easy to do. IKEA must keep us DIYers in mind when building their furniture! Simply measure between the two side pieces. Have a 1×4 cut and it's a perfect fit…depth and all!!!

This staircase is in our French Country farmhouse style kitchen. The slim line of the chest is a perfect fit here. It is going to be great to hold placemats and napkins for the breakfast table.

The stripes really give it interest.

The color of the wood plank top and knobs go perfectly together! Love how they compliment each other.

This was such a fun learning experience for this novice handy girl. Thank goodness for my hubby! With home improvement stores making the cuts for you, this is such a doable project! I love how mine turned out!

Thanks so much to Belwith for supplying the gorgeous hardware, IKEA chest and supplies! We will get many years out of this fabulous chest. I'm ready for my next IKEA hack….it's addictive!

  1. That gray line or stripes really did made it appear more interesting. I will try to do some of these tricks at our own furniture.

  2. Would never have guessed it was an IKEA piece Christy. I love what you did with it and those knobs are so perfect for the look. Thank you for sharing how you made it with the party goers at Shabbilicious Friday. I’m excited to be featuring it at tomorrow’s party.

  3. Love the transformation you gave this IKEA Rast Christy! The dark stained plank top and the grain sack strips completely changed the style of this dresser. Love the feet you used too. Makes me want to take a trip to IKEA.
