Weathered Yardstick Stars
Welcome to another addition of Celebrations of Home: The December Edition
Today there is a little something for everyone!
We have a wonderful team of bloggers each moth participating in The Celebrations of Home.

I created a very simple DIY with a big look……Weathered Yardstick Stars
This is such a simple DIY by using yardsticks and not having to cut wood pieces!
You will need the following supplies to make 1 star: (contains affiliate links)
- 5 yardsticks
- wood glue
- clamps
- paper towels
- white spray paint
- gray spray paint
- black or brown spray paint
- strand of 100 clear string lights
- hanger if desired
The cat is optional for the project. You will use wood glue to connect the yardsticks like pictured above. Wipe up any excess glue with a paper towel. I clamped each joining overnight. It is really strong!
This is the easy part. Spray both sides of the star with black or brown spray paint….or the combination of both. I used both because it was what I had on hand. Let each side dry before flipping.
Then ever so lightly, go back with sprays here and there with white and gray for this weathered look.
Wrap the stars once dry with a strand of white wired clear lights. I used strands of 100 bulbs.
I had planned to hang these, and I still might….but for now I like them placed against these shutters on the front porch. They look beautiful at night!
I think I need to make more to hang from the 2 tress in the front yard.
If I hang from the trees or porch ceiling, I'll suspend them with fishing line.
Be sure to PIN the above images for later and share with your friends!

I have been looking on a diy star That I could make and this is so easy Thank You for sharing
These would be much cheaper to make if you did it the way it was done 30 years ago, the first time I saw ( and made ) these. Buy a bundle of lath strips at the lumber yard. (Lath is pronounced like bath with a l …Incase you want to make sure the guy at the lumber yard understands what you need. They are sold in a bundle, I don’t remember if you get 36 or 48 strips and current price is about $8. Already the perfect length, no cutting. And most of the time they already look weathered based on the type of wood they use to make them. Lath strips are what the old timers used to hold the plastic on when covering windows in the winter…poor mans storm windows.
Great idea….will have to check that out.
How do you handle the plugs when you hang stars with fishing line?
I’m hanging on existing fern hooks. You could use small cup hooks. I think Command makes outdoor hanging hardware. There are also clips for brick.
Great DIY project. Fairly easy and cheap to do. Love the idea of using yardsticks instead of cutting woods. Perfect!
What a fun idea! And BTW I love your porch decorations…so festive! Hugs…Debbie
Hi Christy! I was born and raised near Charleston,SC but have lived in Pacific Palisades, CA for a million years now! I’ve made giant lighted stars that I’ve hung way up in my trees, but I made them with shooting star “tails” so that I could plug them into many hidden extension cords. How would you manage your plugs if you hung your stars from fishing line? You were smart to use wood glue……I put mine together with small brad nails which is much more time consuming! 🙂

I ended up hanging mine from fern hooks on my porch. The cord went above at the top of the porch and around so the cord was hidden. I love your idea of making them trail!
