French Country Thrift Store Chair

Thanks for sharing!

 Romantic Inspired Painted Furniture

Two things I love….French Country and thrifting!

I've really scaled back on the thrifting. When your husband hauls your entire stash to the barn and throws a tarp over it in a stall….there might be a problem! I've been shopping my stash lately!

Some of my blogging friends and I decided in the spirit of February {LOVE} to share romantic styled furniture makeovers. What is more romantic than a French styled chair!

Now this chair is still a work in progress. I shared with you the first of the year my project ambitions for 2014. You can find those HERE. I plan to sew (yikes) a simple slipcover for this little lady or maybe tackle a simple upholstery job on it. I'm still a bit undecided. I'm going to let the rest of this little vignette come together first.

This is the upstairs landing outside the children's bedrooms. Both chairs are from thrift stores. Not pictured so you can see the chair is a round ottoman in desperate need of a new skirt! This area is a WORK IN PROGRESS!!! The chair on the left still needs to be painted and slip covered. The sewing cabinet is my moms. She gave it to me a couple of years ago. It doesn't work here anymore with the 2 chairs. It is being moved downstairs and a smaller side table will take its place. The sewing cabinet will not be painted! This is my little area to showcase my love of the white trend, but not go all out in the house. I love color so I'm sure there will be a patterned pillow or two here. I also hope to add a rug to soften up the space for a cozy reading nook.

Back to “Frenchie.” There is just something about French styled furniture that is so romantic! Don't you think? To finish this up quickly, I used my electric palm sander with an extra fine grit. It took no time at all to lightly distress this in Old White. I finished with clear wax. I'm going to wait and pull it all together, but I may in the end go back and add a touch of dark wax in the grooves.

Such a sturdy chair for $40 from the Restore. Now, I normally would cringe at paying that much, but I don't run across them very often!

The leather of the chair looks so different depending on the lighting!

  1. I love this chair! I have asked several people who do this kind of thing if you have any concerns about buying from resale stores due to bed bugs. Do you take any precautions? Or have you had no problems? I appreciate your thoughts. I would love to try but am fearful due to the risk of these nasty little buggars. It is so bad here, our county courthouse became infested!

    1. I certainly see you concern, Sharon! I vacuum and clean it thoroughly before bringing it into our home. Of course, I’ve never bought anything large like a couch or with lots of fabric space for critter infestation! You know….I think I’ll investigate this and do a post on it! I’m sure many others have the same concern! Thanks bunches! I’m very happy with the chair! ~Christy

  2. Hi Christy! Stopping over from The Scoop, I can’t ever resist looking at a good french chair makeover! I definitely say reupholster the other rather than slipcover, you can do it! The white on the cane chair looks great too. I just finished my own thrift store french chair project, have a post with some sneak peek pictures up right now and a full reveal after the weekend. I love working on them and snap them up whenever I can find one affordably. You did a great job on the vignette, enjoyed visiting your blog 🙂

    1. Thanks so much, Melanie! I so appreciate the pep talk!!! I’ve really been researching and it seems doable! Thanks for your post info. Can’t wait to read it!! XXOO Christy

  3. Christie, I love your French chair and can’t wait for you to finish it!!! The cane back and details are lovely. I don’t know how to upholster furniture. Maybe you could paint it with chalk paint….don’t know if that works on anything other than fabric?? It’s nice as it is!

  4. So pretty- the old white it perfect! I can’t wait to see what you end up choosing for the fabric! And I do love that antique sewing table… glad you aren’t planning to paint it. 🙂

  5. Gorgeous chair! I’ve got a couple similar that I adore! why don’t you paint the leather white too?? I’ve seen some fabulous painted chairs…then you won’t have to sew anything? Well, except for the slipcover for your little ottoman 🙂

    1. Thanks so much. Cindy!!! The leather is in great shape and I don’t hate it. So I really hate to paint it if I really don’t have to. I did recently do a small side chair redo and painted a grain sack stripe on the burlap fabric that I used for the cushion. I need to share that here soon! The fabric paints really well! Painting the leather is still an option, but I’m going to wait and only do if I fail at the sewing! LOL!!! Thanks for stopping by!!! ~Christy

  6. I love your chair Christy! 🙂 What a great find…and that sewing machine is awesome and I’m sure will look great in the new spot. Perfect place for a cozy reading nook! Can’t wait to see it finished!

    1. Thanks so much, Nancy! It is definitely going to be a challenging project…hopefully won’t involve throwing the sewing machine out the window! LOL!!! XXOO Christy

I love hearing from you!
