No Sew Stenciled Drop Cloth Ottoman

Thanks for sharing!

Most no sew projects are fairly simple and can be completed with minimal time.

My No Sew Stenciled Drop Cloth Ottoman falls in that category!

Stenciling is such a simple way to add a bit of color to otherwise plain fabric.

July installment for No Sew projects from top bloggers!

I was a little unsure when I started this project. I had a vision, but sometimes you just have to give it a try. With the chair cushions being a dark green, I decided to lighten the look with the ottoman. I had all of the supplies on hand so that's always a plus!

The drop cloth was left over from another project and the piece was the perfect size. The drop cloth was pre-washed and dried. If you have any wrinkles take a hot iron to it. You want a smooth surface for stenciling.

I know G-R-O-S-S! This is a before from last spring. These pieces had been stored in the upper loft of the barn. They were filthy. They got a good cleaning.

You can see the new cushions for the chairs and paint HERE and HERE.

I have gotten so much use out of these Martha Stewart stencils. I didn't measure. I just eyed the center and taped the first stencil down to the fabric to hold it into place.

Stenciling tips:

  • tape the stencil down
  • lightly dip the stencil brush in paint
  • then blot the brush on a paper towel to remove excess.
  • important to pounce the brush up and down on the stencil. Do NOT brush in the traditional manner. This keeps the paint from running underneath the stencil. Pouncing ensures a nice crisp outline.
  • On drop cloth, I recommend 2 coats
  • Wash your stencil and let it dry before flipping it to the other side to mirror the laurel image.

I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Chateau Grey. Let it dry thoroughly.

I added a bow and bee stencil as well. Then take your fabric and center the design on the cushion. Flip it over and use a heavy duty staple gun to secure it to the cushion. Trim any excess fabric and place on top of the ottoman base.

The base received a fresh coat of black textured Rustoleum spray paint.

It's the perfect spot to prop your feet up on for a little reading. This is on a covered porch so not directly exposed to the elements. I do plan to treat it with an outdoor water protector for extended life.

  1. I used a drop cloth to make a slip cover for a chair and ottoman a few years back. I would love to find more of these drop cloths but Lowe’s does not carry the brand I was using and I cannot find them anywhere. Not even online. Any suggestions? Great project by the way. Love it.

    1. Oh, no! I haven’t bought any in a while. Have you searched that brand on Amazon. You may have to trial and error try some. Also look around at other slipcover projects on Pinterest and see what other brands bloggers have used.

  2. Oh did you ever do great job of centering your stencil. Wonder if that stencil and bee/bow are still available? Will have to take look at Michaels next time I’m there, always so much to look at, especially when they have house hold decorations on sale. Like that you didn’t do too much on cover, just right. I have habit of getting carried away with too much. Looks very nice. You’ll be good example for me.
When you washed your drop cloth did you put into dryer to dry or hang out?
We were given some nice patio furniture last year and new cushions will be in order. as ones that came with furniture are in really bad shape. Will be painting metal furniture also. NO ottoman with it but will have hubs make one with some pallet wood. Will be like new, love idea of that. Happy week

  3. Your pretty drop cloth ottoman caught my eye over at the Get Your DIY On party. I love the stencil detail on the top – so pretty!

  4. What a beautiful transformation, Christy! I love the bee and wreath design. What a great set of furniture. It’s amazing what a little paint and fabric cam do!

I love hearing from you!
