We built our home 9 years ago in Upstate, SC. Our home site is on 7-1/2 acres of mainly wooded land. Across the street, we have 5 acres with a barn that is home to our two horses. Even though we live out in the country, we are just 35 minutes to one major city and 25 minutes to another . Even the small town that is only 10 minutes away from us has a Hobby Lobby! So this area of a rural lifestyle is very close to city living!

I'd love to invite you into Our Southern Home!

This photo was taken in early spring  just as the trees were starting to get their new growth and leaves. You can clearly see the house. We really looked hard for an old home with land to restore, but they are hard to find around here! We decided to build a new home with old style charm. This was a Southern Living Idea House in 2003. We drove to Savannah, GA to tour it. We fell in love with it and decided to build it! To this day, I would not change a thing!

Here is the front of the house this week! So glad I took an earlier photo in the spring or you couldn't see it!

I adore French Country style. We added lots of details here and there that are French and typical of low-country style on the exterior. Do you notice Rocky? He is quite the character! We have 2 cats, 1 black lab (thinks she is a person) and the 2 horses….and 2 teens!

summer home tour

Welcome to our front porch! We under planted most of the beds with mondo grass ground cover to drown out the weeds and eliminate the need for routine mulching. It is green year around. I have beds in the backyard that we mulch due to perennial plantings.

The chairs are resin wicker. The other pieces are thrift store finds painted with exterior paint. I love to bring the indoors out!

The lamp and many of the accessories are thrift store finds. The driftwood and shells are finds from our summer stay on Caswell Beach, NC just brought home last week. We have a small cottage there that we share with my husband's 2 sisters and their families.

Here is the foyer with the study to the left and the formal dining room to the right. It is difficult to get great pics in the study. My hubby works from home, and it is never straight! All three of these rugs are antique or vintage. The study rug was a local purchase, the foyer from was bought on a trip to Portland, Oregon and the dining room rug was a $100 vintage EBAY purchase!

summer home tour

I love to decorate our home. I enjoy decorating with antiques and newer purchases right along with inexpensive thrift store finds that can come alive with a little creative work! Ask any of my family members…..they will tell you'd that I'd rather go to a thrift store than the mall!

These two wing back chairs were in the newspaper (before Craigslist) and were bright canary yellow! One of the book shelve sections actually opens to a hidden wine closet under the stairs. The green table was a solid shiny mahogany table that I recently repainted with Annie Sloan Chalk paint. We are still in need of a desk chair.  Just one of those things you never seem to get around to!

summer home tour

The style of the study is more English country. We had a local tile artist hand paint the English hunt scene around the fireplace surround.

summer home tour

Our formal dining room is still a work in progress. I hope to repaint the walls a lighter neutral color in the fall so the furniture will stand out more. I also hope to slipcover the two end chairs. In our old house we used this table with two extra leaves and it seats twelve. It was a ranch styled home where we converted a formal living room into a dining room. This table fit perfectly in that long space. The two extra leaves are stored under the guest bed.

This is perhaps my favorite room in our home. I love to cook! Lots of family time is spent here. The island is wonderful for parties and family buffets! The tiled French Country scene was painted by the same local artist.

A little touch of summer added to the wet bar in the kitchen. The wooden tray was a $1 thrift store find!

These two couches are on their second fabrics in our family room! Lots of light fills this room. Here are a couple of shots of how I added touches of summer to this room!

I was so fortunate to come home from the beach to find these hydrangeas in bloom!  I have been on the hunt for a vintage fan for quite some time and finally found one this summer at the beach! Southport and Oak Island, North Carolina have tons of wonderful thrift and antique shops! I simply wrapped some large burlap ribbon around the black books to lighten them up for summer. The silver urn was also a $3 thrift store purchase this summer.

I could not have completed this tour without the help of my wonderful summer lighting assistant!

Just a simple wicker tray with summer shells, books and hydrangeas adds a touch of summer.

The screened porch is a favorite spot to dine, sip cocktails and quietly read…..when it isn't too hot!

Here is the back of our home.

summer home tour

Upstairs there are two bedrooms, 2 baths, a craft/exercise room and a media/play room. This is my teen daughter's room.

summer home tour

My son's room has recently changed since this photo. In a recent post you can see the $15 Grain Sack Desk makeover with ASCP that I did for his room. We had to completely rearrange the room to get the desk to fit. As a result, we are having to rearrange wall decor and redecorate…..all because of a wonderful little $15 yard sale find!

summer home tour

My craft space shares company with exercise equipment. This is where I display all of the little pottery projects that the kids have made through the years. The bins above hold school work through the years. On either side there are two closets lined with shelves full of crafting and sewing supplies.

summer home tour

This is the upstairs landing area. It still needs some decorating! It looks down into the family room.

summer home tour

The next few pictures are of our media/playroom space. This large space really sold us on the house plan! It is really like a basement, but upstairs! It is really not for show! I debated whether to even add it to the tour! It is a lived in space with a lot of mixed furniture and accessories. We watch movies and DVR shows a lot together as a family! It is also where my husband and son head to when watching sports!

This mini kitchen area is wonderful for parties. The bottom cabinets hold games and puzzles. The console table was a thrift store find last summer and received an ASCP treatment. That paint is a miracle worker!

AND finally the upstairs laundry room. You've pretty much seen it all!

I hope you have enjoyed the tour. I know it was a bit lengthy, but this is my FIRST complete home tour that I have posted AND it almost marks my 1 year anniversary of blogging on August 1st!

  1. Christy, I sent an email but thought of another question that my wife was wanting to know. Did you white wash or lime wash your tudor brick?

    Thanks!

  2. We are in the beginning phases of getting the plans done to build this exact plan. In the original plan, the downstairs laundry is in the master. Also, the area by the 1/2 bath in the kitchen seems wasted. Would you mind telling me if you kept that in your house the same way, and how those spaces function for you? I’m thinking I would rather a larger downstairs laundry/mud room and not have one upstairs. I would appreciate any feedback or suggestions you might have. Thank you in advance!!! Your house is beautiful!!

    1. Thanks you so much! We didn’t change a thing!Still wouldn’t change a thing. I love having both laundry rooms. No carting clothes up and down stairs. It’s great now that my kids are teens and are able to help with their own laundry when their schedules allow. I highly recommend it. The mudroom area has my blogging desk area and the half bath. There is also a wide hallway to our bedroom…..where the dogs have their beds. Have you looked at the house on Southern Living sites from when it was an idea house? Have fun with it!

  3. The pictures of your front porch absolutely sooth my soul. I have a wrap around porch I just haven’t known what to do with. The idea of bringing the indoors outside sounds perfect. (And I am great with a paint brush!) Thanks so much for your inspiration.

  4. I love your home. I was wondering if you remember the name of the green paint in your daughter’s room. I’m thinking of a pale green for my granddaughters’ room.

  5. Beautiful home! Forgive me for what I’m about to suggest because, clearly, you don’t need advise when it comes to your home, but you should consider omitting paperbacks from the library shelves and removing all the dust jackets from books. There’ll be less visual clutter on the stacks because the books will either have a dark cloth covering or a dark tape on their spines and will likely have a metallic lettering on the spine. Sometimes light reflects ever so gently off the metallic lettering. It’s really quite nice. But again, beautiful beautiful home, and I’m so glad I stumbled onto your blog. I don’t even remember how I got here! LOL

  6. Hi Christy! Just finding your blog – loved your home tour! I’m wondering if you have the name/make of the green in your kitchen? It’s such a lovely blue/green. I’m hoping to use it in my kitchen makeover. A never ending project!

    Jan

    1. Thanks so much, Janice! Yes…it is Sherwin Williams in Tea Leaves #1152. It’s a nice, earthy sage green….not pastely. Happy remodel to you! ~Christy

  7. Christy, I’m late getting around to all the home tours, but want to thank you for opening this gorgeous home to your readers. It’s obvious that you offer loving care to creating a beautiful home for your family. The gardens and outdoor spaces are just as welcoming as your interior. Like you, I’d rather shop a thrift or consignment store than go shopping in a mall. In fact, I couldn’t tell you the last time I was actually in a mall. You have beautiful things. Thanks again for sharing your home……..Sarah

    1. Thanks so very much, Sarah! Luckily my 14 year old daughter loves thrift shopping. We are actually at the beach for the week and there is a wealth of thrift and consignment stores here. She brought a friend with her, and they want to go to the clothing consignment store here! Say what!!! We are heading there today. Have a lovely day. Hope to hear from you again! ~Christy

  8. Christy- I found you thru Kim at Savvy SL. What a beautiful home you have- and even though it is a showplace I can tell that you LIVE in the house. It is perfectly wonderful. I am your newest follower and will put you on my sidebar right away and hope others will discover you, too! Loved the tour- xo Diana

  9. Christy,
Loved the pics of your beautiful home. The Abberly Lane plan is one of my very favorites! We built a John Tee SL plan called Meadowlands and used the Spalding Tudor brick with beige trim and columns. I hope you don’t mind me asking, but we are about to build another home and plan to use the same brick. I love the lighter trim color you used for a change with this brick. Would you mind sharing the color trim & shingle that you used for your house? It looks like a true white, but I wanted to ask. Our previous shingle we used was Estate Gray – it had a slight green tint. Love the brick, but since we have the opportunity to build again, would like to change it up a little bit.
    Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Jennifer! Thanks bunches! I am on vacation right now, but will get back with you next week of the exact color. It is not a bright white. It is a creamy off-white. I can also look up the shingle for you as well. I have a crate on the home from when we built. Have a lovely day~ Christy

      1. Hi Christy! Just checking to see if you were able to check the name of the shingle color you used.
        Thank you,
        Jennifer

        1. Oh, Jennifer! I completely forgot! I am so sorry!!! I have several requests from Friday’s kitchen tour as well. Going to take fall stuff down from attic this evening so I will pull that crate out then! Thanks for being patient!!! ~Christy

          1. Hey Jennifer! The shingles are Elk Capstone in the color granite. The brick is spaulding tudor and the exterior trim paint is AC-42 by Ben Moore. Hope that helps! ~Christy

    1. Thanks so very much, Pamela! As you know, it is always an ongoing process! Big hug to you. I know y’all are loving the pool! ~Christy

  10. Your home is beautiful! We also live in Upstate SC, in Anderson. When my husband retired from the USMC 3 years ago, we moved back home to SC and actually had picked out the same houseplan as yours to build on our family’s 200+ year old farm. Instead, we ended up buying a home built in 1899 in downtown Anderson. I really enjoyed looking through your rooms, I remember how much I loved that floorplan!

    1. Lisa,
How neat that you live so close to me! We love downtown Anderson. We have even talked about wanting an historic home there when the kids are off to college in 4 short years! Thanks so much for stopping by and the sweet compliments! ~Christy

      1. Christy – Maybe we could just switch houses, LOL. We have 5 children, 3 were adopted from India. 2 are in college, but the youngest just turned 13 so we have a few years left before the nest is empty. I’m a teacher, but stayed home and homeschooled for years. I’m teaching at South Fant now.

Maybe we will run into each other downtown some day – Summa Joe’s is our favorite restaurant on Main St. Do you ever do the Home Tours in Anderson in December? We really enjoy those, they pick a different neighborhood every year. I get some great decorating ideas then!

        1. Summa Joe’s is great! I used to teach elementary school until my second was born. I’ve been a stay at home mom since. I started substituting at their schools in the spring. I enjoy getting back in the classroom without being a full time teacher! I am not aware of the Anderson home tours. I’ll have to look into it! I’m only 20 minutes from downtown! Yes, maybe we will meet one day! How fun!!! ~Christy

  11. Such a spectacular home. Every room shoes your love of home and family and your eye for just the right thing. Please make up the guest room bed. I’m packing up and moving in with you. Lol!

    1. Oh, Peggy you are so sweet AND funny! Thanks you so much for your wonderful continued support! So wish you lived closer for the occasional cocktail get together! ~Christy

  12. Your home is just stunning, Christy, and it’s ginormous! Love your furnishings and the open layout. The kitchen is to die for. Thanks so much for joining us on our home tour!

  13. I never tire of seeing your beautiful home Christy! Beautiful inside and out! Would love for you to share at Amaze Me Monday…
    Blessings,
    Cindy

  14. Christy, I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again–your home is so lovely! What a wonderful tour. I didn’t know you’d used a Southern Living plan–those are just the best, aren’t they?

    Beautiful!

  15. Christy, Your home is everyone’s dream. From reading your words, I sense that you must know how blessed you are. Your kind of home can not be acquired or maintained on the majority of folks income. God has blessed you and your family with an incredible home.

You have impeccable taste and that kitchen is a real show stopper. I got some good ideas for my home which is a farmhouse style on 17 acres of land. I most envy your landscaping. The deer keep eating my flowers and my beagle likes to make his nest in my annuals so I have gone to container gardening until Copper goes to Doggie heaven…that dog has 11 lives for certain.

I’m a mother of 3, grandmother of 5, a retired teacher of 30+ yrs., married to my college sweetheart of 40 yrs and my passion is quilting. I love my farmhouse but hate housework! I would love to trade off some quilting for your home decorating skills!! I enjoyed discovering your blog and living vicariously in what I consider a mansion by going on your home tour.

Count your Blessings, Name them one by one, Count your blessings see what God has done!
    Blessings
    Gmama Jane

    1. Oh, Jane you are just so sweet! Thanks for your sweet comments! Deer in the country can be quite frustrating! I used to teach school before staying home with the kids. Quilting is such a wonderful craft. I am a knitter. Sure wish I had more time for it! Have a blessed day!~Christy

  16. So pretty! I especially love the outside of your home, I could definitely be talked in to a glass of wine on your front porch 🙂 Beautiful job!

    1. Thanks so much!!!! I do look forward to meeting and chatting over a glass of wine one day! ~Christy

  17. Your beautiful home epitomizes Southern charm and grace.

I know you said you are going to neutralize your red dining room, but I thought I would tell you that I think it is quite beautiful as it is! I can’t believe your eBay luck with that rug. I have always wanted a red DR, and somehow it has just never worked out. Maybe my next house…

Thank you for the tour! Your assistant reminds me of another kid I once knew — me!

    1. Thanks so much! I keep going back and forth on the dining room! Errrr! Not sure what I’ll end up with. Thanks you so much for visiting. I hope to hear from you again! ~Christy

  18. Thanks so much for sharing your home with us.

  21. Christy – Your home is stunningly beautiful! Every single room is just gorgeous. You’ve done a wonderful job of creating a special home for your family. I didn’t know that you and your family have a place at Caswell Beach! We have a tiny condo at N. Topsail Beach. The Southport area is one of my fave places to shop down there and my fave place to eat (Provisions) is located there too. Let’s meet sometime when we’re both there!

    1. Thanks so much, Suzy! My son went a couple of years ago with his friend’s family for a week on Topsail Beach. He talked about how great the waves were! We will definitely have to coordinate a Southport shopping meet-up! There are wonderful thrift shops on Oak Island as well. When you head back to Southport next time, be sure to go to the Restore! It is huge and awesome. You may already know about it, but it would be on the left right before you go over the bridge to Oak Island! Can’t wait to chat at Haven!!! ~Christy

    1. Thanks bunches, Tamyra! It has been an ongoing labor of love for the past 9 years. I am sure you are the same….will I ever say it is completely finished! LOL! Big Hug~Christy

  25. Hi Christy,
Love your house plan– it is one that I looked at many times in Southern Living and thought was so beautiful! You have done a great job with decorating it too. I live in Southport, and it is so fun to hear you mention things about our wonderful town! The pics of the area houses you posted and the Safe Haven posts were fun to look at and read! Glad you like the area so much- we love it too!

    1. Thanks bunches, Ronda! I just love the Southport area. We share a small, older cottage on Caswell Beach with my husband’s 2 sisters and their families. We’ve been married for 23 years so I’ve been going there for quite a while. If it were not for the kids and them in high school, I’d move there in an instant! ~Christy 🙂

  26. You have such a gorgeous home – wow – it’s so huge!

I love so much of it – not sure my favorite, honestly maybe that WOWZA curb appeal?

It’s amazing and you have decorated it beautifully, what a dream space.

I think the true best part is that beautiful lighting assistant, how cute is that????????????????

Thanks so much for sharing, this was super fun!

    1. Michelle,
Thanks so very much! Even tough it is a large 4600 sq feet, I think some of those wide-angle lens photos do make it look a bit larger than it is. I am so happy you stopped by. My daughter has been a huge help with it this summer. She loves it! Big Hug~ Christy

  27. You say you do all the work yourselves, how often do you clean all those windows? You must have to have a bottle of Windex in each room! Do you do your own routine house cleaning? Such a beautiful home! You and your husband must be awfully proud to have this. Do you do a lot of formal entertaining? Great house for parties! Love your enclosed courtyard..

    1. Betty,

My husband and I cleaned all of the windows this spring. The porch French door and the large window in our master bedroom require more frequent cleaning since they are on the main level. Sometimes we use that Windex window cleaner you attach to a hose. If it’s just a quick clean on a French Door, we will send our 2 teens to do it as a chore. I stood on the upper roof to clean the exterior windows. The only windows that have not been cleaned in ages are the ones in the 2 story family room. The interior are impossible for us to get to, but are easily cleaned from the outside standing on the roof! I clean the entire downstairs myself. The 2 teens do their rooms/bathrooms and they divide up the cleaning in the upstairs hall and bonus room. If there is a party or company coming over…I usually go behind them a bit. Teen boys are not the best cleaners in the world! When I was teaching full time, I had someone clean once per week, but since I am a stay at home mom, I do it all now. I actually don’t mind cleaning! BUT believe me, it doesn’t always look like the pictures! LOL! Christy 🙂

  28. Thanks for the tour of your lovely home, Christy! I think the kitchen would be my favorite room too. Love that you have ample seating at your kitchen island. Friends and family can sit there and hang out while you cook. You have wonderful architectural details throughout your home that I just love. The outside is quite attractive!!

    1. Thanks, Jennifer! It is a great family house. The island is a regular homework and crafting spot as well! I have so enjoyed all of the tours! Happy to have connected through the tour~ Christy 🙂

  29. Your home is amazing Christy! How wonderful to have all that land around you–it must be so peaceful and quiet! Your home is beautiful inside as well. Love all your French Country touches. Thanks for sharing!
    ~Delores

    1. Thanks so much, Delores! We have so loved living a quiet life in the country! We have just a few neighbors and they are just wonderful! I so enjoyed your beautiful home as well. Blessings~Christy

  30. There are so many things I love about your home I’m not sure where to start! It has such curb appeal, I love the openness of the family room, and I really love the English cottage feel throughout… thank you so much for letting me peek inside 🙂

    1. Thanks so very much, Shana! I have enjoyed making our house a home!! I so appreciate connecting with you through the tour! Have a lovely weekend! ~Christy

  31. WOW!! Your home excudes Southern style! Warm and welcoming. What a beautifully layed out home, it has such a nice flow from room to room. It is grande to look at and yet it feels so inviting. You have stayed true to the spirit of Southern Comfort, warm and inviting! This has been such a fun week of touring, thank you for inviting us into your lovely home.
    xo Kathysue

    1. Kathysue,

Thanks from the bottom of my heart! I have so enjoyed the tour as well and connecting with so many wonderful people! Big Hug! Christy

  32. I love how much space you have and the land you have to go with your home! I haven’t seen that much of a yard since I moved away from GA 18 years ago.
You have a wonderful home, I would love to have a Southern style home, but for now, I will be happy in my Florida home!

    1. Thanks so very much! We love living here, but all the land can be a bit overwhelming at times! We take care of everything ourselves! I so loved you Florida home tour! I wish we had a pool with an enclosure. The mosquitoes can be quite bad here too! So happy to connect through the tour. Big hug~Christy

  33. Your home is absolutely beautiful. It reflects the Southern Living style of homes. I love so many things, the front porch, the rear porch, the layout of the house, the herringbone brick on the fireplace, the rugs as you enter your house, that kitchen is amazing, the ceiling details, and all the iron balusters. Thanks so much for the tour. Enjoy.
Thanks, Patty at Home and Lifestyle Design

    1. Patty,
You are so sweet! Thank you so much for the sweet compliments and noticing the details! I hope you have a lovely weekend! ~Christy

  34. Christy,
Wow! I didn’t expect a mansion but it is beautiful inside and out. You have made it elegant, adding color and warmth to each room. I have enjoyed the Summer Tour of Homes and have picked up a lot of inspiration from them. Each person had their own “template” and personality added to their home. I probably loved something or many things about each house tour. Thanks for sponsoring this. It has been fun!

    1. Thanks so much, Betty! I always love hearing from you! I’m so pleased you enjoyed the tour. Look for more to come in the future!!! ~Christy

  35. Wow! Your home is so gorgeous! We, too, live on an acreage surrounded by farms and horses yet 5 min away from Costco. I love country living with city convenience 🙂

    1. Andrea,
