Rustic Deer Sign Tutorial

Thanks for sharing!

All of the Halloween decor has been put away. I've got my Thanksgiving tablescape ready. Now is the time to get a few Christmas crafts complete before the hustle and bustle of the season.

Welcome to another edition of our monthly series, Celebrations of Home!

This project was so simple. I became inspired to do this when I came across the pallet sign in the craft section of Walmart. It was less than $10 and a perfect 12×12 size for tabletop decor.

I printed out my image on BlockPosters.com. For a 1 page image it was free. It's a great way to enlarge your images for larger projects.

Here is the PDF for you ready for printing:  deer head pattern  It's 2 pages. The second page is what you will use.

Center the copy on the pallet sign and secure in place with tape. Slide the piece of graphite paper under the sign and trace with a pen. It's a quick way to transfer an image to a surface to be painted.

Remove the graphite paper and you are left with the traced image. So easy and quick!!

Use a craft or chalk paint to fill in your shape. I painted mine with Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Everlasting. I used a flat artist brush.  You will notice that I purposely didn't completely cover the deer with white. I wanted the wood grain to slightly show through for the rustic look.

I'm in the process of doing a mini-makeover of the guest bedroom. More to come! I've decided to add shades of blue in here for Christmas. My inspiration is the fabulous pillow peeking out on the bed from HomeGoods.

I created this little fella while sitting on the couch watching TV. I tell ya…it's a quick and simple DIY. It would make a great gift.

It's got a nice thickness to it. There is even a twine piece on the back if you desire to hang it.

I'm really looking forward to getting this room prettied up for the holidays.

  1. I love this idea, Christy! Not only is it awesome for displaying, but it would make a great gift too. And duh – I forgot all about using graphite paper to transfer an image.

  2. I love deer, antlers, and the whole rustic look. Even though our cottage is quite rustic, I still like some of it to overlap into our real house. Thanks for the pattern and for the tutorial. I’ve already pinned this and will be making it when I find some spare time…

  3. Cute project, Christy! I found an ancient box of carbon paper in a closet at school and felt like I’d hit the jackpot! I’ll have to look for the pallet sign that you used at Walmart.

I love hearing from you!
