Weathered Finish Thrift Store Lamp Makeover
Hello, friends! It seems like it has been forever since I've published a new project……several weeks to be exact.
If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen what I've been up to for the last 6 weeks or so. We have been working on our most challenging flip house to date. On Instagram, search this hashtag… #OSHRiversideFlip. We decided to stage this one and any new ones from here on out. I've spent a lot of time on this house and about 3 weeks ago, I decided that I needed to be the one to stage it. I just couldn't relinquish that control. So I've been a mad woman shopping thrift stores and discount stores for a high endish look on a big time budget. I've become very good friends with Craig (Craigslist of course!).
Pretty soon, I'll have loads to share with you on the home.
Here's the first of many projects for this home…..the staging part that is. I'm sharing my Weathered Finish Thrift Store Lamp Makeover.
Each month I get together with my thrift store girls to share with you our finds and transformations.
I have a big love of thrift store lamps. They have so much potential. I knew when I came across this one that I had to have it for my staging needs. I'm kind of liking it here in our family room.
It's amazing what you can do with paint!
It has a great trophy shape that is really on trend right now. I believe it was $7.50. It being wood is a great plus when it comes to distressing.
I started off by spraying the brass base and tiny finial screw in (affiliate link) Rust-Oleum Oil Rubbed Bronze.
I let that dry for several hours. Then I removed the tape from the wooden area. I then taped off the freshly painted bronze. Then I painted the base with (affiliate link) Amy Howard One-Step paint in Selznick Grey.
Then I pulled out various other colors that I had in chalk paint. (affiliate links sprinkled throughout the post)
- Amy Howard Atelier
- Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Duck Egg
- Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Pure White
- Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Coco
- Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old Ochre
Keep paper towels handy for this part. I placed a small amount of paint on a paper plate for each color. Add a tiny drop of water to thin the paint. Dip brush slightly in the paint, then wipe off with a towel. Then “dry brush” the lamp haphazardly. Keep layering colors.
Let dry and distress slightly with fine grit sandpaper.
I applied Americana Decor Creme Wax all over. I then applied a tiny bit of Americana Decor Deep Brown Wax in crevices for definition and around the base.
Once the lamp was finished, I didn't like the newness of the bronze. I took some of the watered down white paint on a paper towel and just wiped it on and off. It aged the base. I then applied clear and dark wax.
It looks as if it has a weathered, aged patina now. Perfect for my French Farmhouse Style.
I then topped it off with a burlap shade from Ross.

Now it's time to check out the other projects from the thrift store team!
