Shopping Your Home {A Three Month Challenge} Part 1

Thanks for sharing!

One space, three ways decorating challenge with tips on using what you have by Our Southern Home

This month I have a little something different for you! Something you can join in on as well….. One space, three ways decorating challenge with tips on using what you have.

After you have removed all of the holiday decorations, you are left with a clean slate.

A clean slate with a new year can be refreshing.

It is so easy to become complacent with our decorating. We get set in our ways and gradually become bored. Or, I do! That may mean shopping for more new stuff and spending money you'd rather not.

It's hard looking at all the beautiful photos on Pinterest and developing envy.

3 Month Decorating Challenge - One space, three ways brought to you by a group of top bloggers!

Here is the challenge.

  • I challenge you to pick one space in your home and decorate it in a new way 1x per month for 3 months.
  • You can only use what you have. That means “shopping” your home. You can leave your credit card in your wallet for this one.
  • You may purchase fresh flowers.
  • Share in our Facebook group, Decorating Entusiasts – DIY Forum. Click the link to join.{Information Below}

Here was this area for fall. At Christmas, it had our Dickens Village on it.

This chest in our family room is my one space. I will leave the mirror here. It's perfect for this cabinet. I've toyed with painting the cabinet, but my husband gave it to me as a gift many years ago, and I know it would hurt his feelings.

My goal is to change everything out each month for 3 months including the lamp!

The lamp was a Goodwill find and brought back to life with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. I may repaint it soon. The fleur-de-lis was at a deep discount at a local craft store. The large silver urn was from a thrift store as well as the bird. I painted the birds white. Only one is used here. The silver cup is my son's baby cup. Needs an appointment with silver cleaner, but I don't mind the tarnish.

The books are from my collection.  Books are fabulous to decorate with on your surfaces. They elevate smaller items, add color and interest.

The oil was on the wall in the kitchen. I removed it to hang my chalkboard menu board that I made back in August. Don't be afraid to lean art against the wall. Just make sure it is secure. The heavy fleur and books help keep it from possibly sliding.

Adding a small votive adds a little ambiance on those cold, winter evenings.

Fresh flowers don't have to cost a fortune. Your grocery store can be an excellent source. Carnations last forever and are so easy to work with. Here I cut the stems shorter so they would lie around the rim of the urn. They are meant to be used like this. I used 2 bunches here. The bunches were $4 each. Change your water often for lasting beauty. These are still looking great at 2 weeks old.

TIPS TO SHOP YOUR HOME

  • Don't be afraid to move accessories and furniture from room to room
  • Take art off the wall and lean on a table top
  • Raid your bookcase for books to use in your vignette
  • Dining table runners can also be used in other areas of the home
  • Swap room pillows
  • Swap throws
  • Change out lamps
  • Rearrange the room for a new look
  • Use unexpected items for flower vases. A basket with a jar inside can hold flowers. Wrap a jar in fabric and tie at the top with ribbon or twine.
  • Use colorful beans, buttons, wine corks, etc. in jars and containers around candles.
