Homes of Historic Southport {Walking Tour}

Thanks for sharing!

You all know that Southport, NC is one of my favorite places. My daughter and I took a stroll along the historic waterfront snapping pictures here and there of this small town of beauty. I'll keep my writing to a minimum because I know you just want to look at all the pretty!

This is one of the houses across the street from the store set used in Safe Haven.

This is the house that was used as Alex's home in the movie.  It is directly across the street from the store set. The store set was built just for the movie and sadly burned down as part of the movie.

This gravel area is where the store in Safe Haven once was located.  It was just beautiful with old town charm!

  1. Christy, I love your blog and was delighted to see your post on Southport, NC. We have a vacation home on Sunset Beach which is a 35-45 minute drive to Southport and we love tp take visiting friends to Southport for lunch, shopping and an afternoon of walking through the this historic seaside town. Another good day-trip is to take the ferry from Southport over to Bald Head Island and spend the day exploring the beach side and forested side of that island via golf cart. There are no cars allowed on Bald Head Island. Sunset Beach Island is the last beach in NC before entering SC. National Geographic listed Sunset Beach as #5 in is 2019 list of 21 Best Beaches in the World. Nicholas Sparks’ book, “Every Breath” features the Kindred Spirit mailbox on Bird Island — a reserve adjacent to Sunset Beach on the Brunswick Islands. People have been walking to the Kindred Spirt Mailbox for 30+ years and writing in the journals left in the Kindred Spirt mailbox. People write about their hopes, dreams, sad and happy things. A library of journal notebooks are held in the old Bridge Museum in Sunset Beach, NC.

    1. Thanks so very much! Yes, we love Bald Head Island. Every couple of years we go over and do just what you suggested. I have a post on Bald Head. We have friends that used to have a home on Sunset. Haven’t been there in a long time. Your description makes me want to take a day trip now! I don’t think I’ve read that Nicholas Sparks book. Gooing to check it out.

  2. I love the look of these historic homes. I love seeing their porches. Modern homes don’t have a great focus on a great front porch. It would be amazing to live in a historic home.

  3. I just stumbled upon your beautiful blog and wanted to say thank you for showcasing our sweet town of Southport, NC! What a fun way to see it featured. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed reading it.

    1. Thank you so much for commenting! We have a family beach house on Caswell Beach and spend a lot of the summer there. I’d love to get in touch with your when there sometime to do a family beach portrait with us! Merry Christmas! XO Christy

      1. Oh Christy, that would be wonderful, we would love to do a family beach portrait session with you and your family!
I had no idea you live here, I just assumed you were visiting. Such a small world! Merry Christmas to you as well!

  4. Hi Christy, browsing online today, making drapes for bedroom and stumbled onto your website. amazing, My mom and dad live at Oak Island, been looking for a home down there now for a year, think we are going to build one soon. would give anything to live in Southport, I LOVE driving through, walking around this sweet quaint town, even love walking through graveyard. We do eat at “The Frying Pan” every time we visit, but will now try “The Provision Company” next for sure!! I have taken many pics of all the wonderful homes myself, just cannot get enough of this beautiful area, and love the people!

    1. Small world!!! I love Southport, too. Love the Frying Pan, too. Maybe we will meet up sometime in Southport over the summer! ~Christy

    1. Thanks so much, Kelly! It is such a beautiful small town. We can actually eat dinner on the water there and let the kids leave while the adults linger over cocktails to wander around or get ice cream! You don’t find that much anymore!!So glad you enjoyed it!! ~Christy

  5. Christy, I just sent you an email..so I won’t repeat it here. Used to play against Southport in sports and they were always our allies in sports..wonderful folk there. I didn’t see any spanish moss hanging from the big old oak trees like there used to be when I grew up near Southport. Has their been some type of disease that has killed it all off? Hurricane Hazel hit this down pretty bad back in the late 1950’s. i’ve seen a beautiful home with a 3 season porch all glass on 3 sides. Hazel uprooted this hugh oak tree that was next to this porch/sun room, and never broke any of the glass in that room. It was an amazing site. the entire house could have been leveled to the ground had that tree fell on it.
Have you visited Callahan’s at Calabash area? It’s a neat gift shop but also a tourist trap. You can get some nice things there and reasonably priced. I think it is right on Rt. 17 S.

Good seafood restaurants in Southport and Calabash..
The ride from Kure Beach via the Ferry is neat. When we were ‘home” the last time, my best friend and her husband took us on that. My how all that area has grown since I moved away. Your photos/walk tour is making me homesick! Thanks for the memories!

    1. We have owned our home on Caswell Beach for over 20 years! It is a wonderful area…Oak Island and Southport. We rarely leave the are except for occasional trips into Wilmington! So nice to hear from a reader that is familiar with the surroundings! ~Chrsity

  6. Christy – I am totally coveting. Each one is more beautiful and charming than the next. I would move there in a hot second! Hugs, Holly

    1. Oh, my! I am with you! I was just telling my husband that I could move there in an instant!!! ~Christy

  7. I’m thrilled that I came across your photo tour-and to think I was just browsing through Pinterest….I am packing for a visit to my sister for a week and she just moved to Yaupon Drive in Southport! I cannot wait to visit and see for myself~she is absolutely in love with the town 🙂

    1. The Oak Island beaches are wonderful. Small town beach life!! Be sure to check out Caswell. It is where our cottage is. It is just one road in that dead ends so rather small. It is just fun to drive around and explore. You will LOVE going into Southport! Lots of quaint shopping and restaurants! Have a wonderful trip!!! ~Christy

  8. Charming…loved the stroll! Our family is heading for a week to Kure beach in September. Maybe I’ll be at Haven next year…
    Blessings,
    Cindy

    1. It is! If you like small town beach life, you will love the Oak Island beaches and Southport all in one convenient location! ~Christy

    1. Thanks bunches, Donna! It was a fun post to do. So happy to share the beauty of the area! Hugs~Christy

  9. I loved each and every picture on your tour. Our friends have a home at Kure Beach and we once took the ferry to Southport to eat lunch. We drove through the town but I couldn’t truly enjoy it from the car. I want to watch Safe Haven now that I’ve seen your pictures.

Speaking of Haven, I’ll see you there in a few weeks.

    1. Thanks so much, Paula! The ferry rides here are so much fun. I can’t wait for Haven and to meet you as well! ~Christy

    2. Read the book first, then take the tour..Both the book and the movie were good but there are differences in the book and movie that I noticed. But maybe I had better read the book again, as sometime my reading comprehension isn’t always the best.

Christy, it’s been years since I was there. Any recommendations of good restaurants in Southport?

      1. We love the restaurants on the waterfront. Provisions, Fish Fishy and the new Frying Pan are great selections. Provisions is definitely our favorite. Be warned…it is a dive!!! But the steamed shrimp and crab cakes are amazing! ~Christy

I love hearing from you!
