Thrift Store Basket Tray Makeover

Monthly thrift store challenge with top bloggers!

Welcome to the first installment of 2016 for the monthly Thrift Store Decor Makeover Challenge!

I literally just bought this month's thrift store project Friday night at Goodwill. I recently had a conversation with  friends and their husbands at a holiday party. The conversation was quite hysterical, and really not sure how it came about.

Are you ever out with your significant other, and you say, “While we are out, let's stop in ______!” Come to find out, it happens quite a bit. I never even thought of it, but it's so true!

Friday night while going out to eat, I played the while we are out card……I kind of make a joke of it now. We ended up in Goodwill.

Baskets can be a great find at the thrift store. I came across this one and picked it up quickly. Honestly, I've never seen one like this one before.

I didn't like the dark green finish on the handle.

I struggled a bit with what to do with this basket. I like the color of the basket so decided to start with changing the finish of the handle. I can always go back and do a wash on the basket later.

I know this looks nuts, but I only wanted to paint the handle. I didn't want to be tedious and paint it by hand. I wanted to quickly spray it. So I applied tape and newspaper to the basket areas.

It took about 30 minutes to do this and 5 minutes to spray 2 coats of black textured spray paint not including dry time between coats. I used the same  (affiliate link) Rustoleum paint that I use on my outdoor patio furniture.

It's a very simple makeover. Sometimes my thrift store finds need no makeover. That's the beauty of it……use it how you like!

I love it on the island.

This little chicken was also a thrift store find. It has a little chip on a wing, but I just positioned it to the back.

This tray will get a lot of use this summer for outdoor entertaining.

  1. I have had a similar basket on my island for quite some time…You are going to LOVE it for organizing all the “stuff” that inevitably finds it’s way there! Great project! I have yet to get my hubby to go to the thrift store, and that’s okay since he probably would give me a hard time for buying other people’s junk…little does he know most of the treasures I pick up are from there!

    1. It’s great. I have the tv remotes tucked in the back behind the books and my chapstick! Some just don’t have the vision when walking in a thrift store. I didn’t like it in my early years of marriage when mom drug me with her. It didn’t take me long to catch on when I saw how affordable I could decorate our new home together….fast forward 26 years! Thanks!

    1. I bet where you live is gorgeous! Just make a day of thrifting and stock up on a couple of items to get you DIYing. Keep me posted!

I love hearing from you!
