Thrift Store Cheese Box Caddy Makeover

Thanks for sharing!

Welcome to Swap It Like It's Hot! What is that you say??? It's where a group of bloggers went thrift store shopping and sent $10 worth of goodies to another blogger.

I got so lucky on my swap partner! My dear blogging friend, Christy from Confessions of a Serial Do-It-Yourselfer sent me my treasures. It was so fun opening the box and reading the sweet note. Christy's brother lives about 20 minutes from me and she dropped in for a visit last fall.

Christy sent some great stuff. I got a hoop cheese box, coffee cup holder and clip board. I was so needing a clipboard for when I am at one of our flip house job sites. I'm using it simply as it is!

This was a simple update using Metallic Gold Spray Paint by Rust-oleum.

Just be sure to clean the piece first.

I almost painted it white, but remembered that I had a can of the gold. I am so glad that I went that route. Sitting on the burlap runner and against that frame, it just looks meant to be.  It kind of looks like something I'd purchase from West Elm or Pottery Barn now.

Now, it was time to work on the cheese box. I spray painted it with several coats of satin finish Rust-oleum in Blossom White.

I then used my French stencil from DeoArt

With a stencil brush I painted it with duck egg blue by Annie Sloan Chalk Paints.

The addition of this one kitchen caddy caused me to rearrange my kitchen counters. I'm still in the process off painting the kitchen. All I lack now is painting the green island the same new color as the hood.

I love it with my DIY Farmhouse Art also made with a thrift store item.

The stencil was such a quick way to give an otherwise plain item a bit of French Country Farmhouse style.

I did lightly sand the box after spray painting for a smoother finish. I did not distress any of it.

  1. Christy, It’s so cute! I love the box and how perfectly it wrangles all those items that just need to stay out on the counter! And I don’t think I would have known that was a coffee cup holder. Doy. 🙂

  2. I love the cheese box!! So cool! It looks like it’s always been like that, which is the sign of an awesome DIY! Really creative!

  3. Hello Christy! I am new to your site and it’s wonderful. I came across your site from Christy at Confessions of a Serial DIY. What you made with the cheese box looks right at home in your kitchen. The stencil is beautiful and I really like the gold finish on the mug holder/turned bracelet holder. What a nice change up. And you’re right. The gold on it goes perfectly with the mirror, like it was meant to be. Thank you so much for sharing.

  6. I LOVE how you have combined lots of smaller items to make a bigger impact! I have quite a lot of little things the I cherish and want to use but can never find a good spot for. This has given me some new ways to incorporate them into my home. Thanks!
