Chalk Painted French Chair

Thanks for sharing!

It's time for our Themed Furniture Makeover Day!

This month's theme is RED.

I really don't use red in our home, but I do use rusty reds and burgundy.

I painted a French leather chair with Annie Sloan Chalk Paints in Primer Red and Old White.

I really love how it turned out.

It used to look like this.

Like this when I bought it.

I originally painted it old white with clear wax. I left the leather as is.

I do have plans to reupholster it, but until then I decided to freshen it up with paint.

You know I have an infatuation with grain sack stripes.

You can see how I do the grain sack paint technique HERE and HERE.

I painted 3 coats of Old White on the leather. I let it cure overnight.

The next morning, I taped off the stripes and painted them in Primer Red with 3 coats. I let this cure all day.

I decided that I wanted to richen up the already painted and waxed frame. I mixed a very small amount of dark wax with clear wax to make a medium brown wax. I added the coat of wax just to the frame and buffed. I like the contrast between the darker frame and seat.

Later that day, I gave an ever so light sanding with a fine sanding block to the leather. I didn't sand the red….just the white.

I then applied 2 coats of wax with a bit of cure time between coats. I'll probably go back and add a 3rd coat.

I've never painted leather before. I'm not sure how it will hold up. This is a chair that is looked at more than lounged in. I do still hope to reupholster soon, but until then…I love its new look!

  1. Christy…so creative my friend! Love the grainsack stripe on the chair and doing it with paint even more! Looking forward to sharing this on my FB page, I know it will be popular!

  2. I painted a chair almost identical to this last year. I use it every day, as it sits in from of my vanity. The leather was cracked here and there because the chair had been ignored for a long time I think. (I bought it at an estate sale) Recently I did give the leather part another coat of paint but not wax. Where the old cracks had been, the paint did crack a little after daily use for a year. I think that’s pretty good!

    1. Great to know that yours has worn well!!! I know mine will start to show cracks as it is already worn. I love that part!

  3. WOW! What a fantastic job you did, LOVE the grain sack striped effect, and the fact that you painted real leather. I would love to hear how well it holds up to wear and tear, as I’m SERIOUSLY considering painting my leather sofa – it’s currently brown and I hate how dark it makes the room. We had young grandkids when we bought it, and only really thought about the practicalities and not so much about the colour, BIG mistake, as it doesn’t get much wear and tear these days and I think it’s going to last for EVER!!!

    1. I am really loving it!! I have lots of blogging friends that have painted leather and fabric with great success. I would really search a lot before I painted an entire leather couch. I think an occasional chair that gets rare use is fine, but not sure a couch with high use would be a good bet. If you do paint it, I’d love to see a pic. I think a better option would be a slip cover either custom or ready-made.

  4. Beautiful! I am not much of a DIY’er but you keep inspiring me. I had no idea you could paint leather! What an incredible makeover! Your chair is lovely, I am sure you will enjoy having it in your home!

I love hearing from you!
