Some rooms in our homes evolve slowly over time, and I think those are often the rooms with the most character.
Our den is one of those spaces.
We’ve loved this room for years. The warm wood paneling, built-in bookcases, fireplace, traditional rug, books, family photos, blue and white pieces, and things we’ve collected over time have always made it feel special. I had no desire to completely redecorate it.
What I did want was to freshen it up a bit.
Replacing two chairs and adding a small side table turned out to be just enough. The room feels brighter and more inviting, but it still has the same classic, collected character that we love.
A Den, Study, or Snug?
I’ve always referred to this room as our study, but lately I find myself calling it our den as well. And then there’s a term I’ve been seeing more and more in interiors: snug.
While the words are sometimes used interchangeably, they each describe something slightly different.
A study traditionally refers to a room used for reading, writing, or working, which certainly describes this space. The desk and home office are on one side of the room.
A den is typically a smaller, informal living space used for relaxing, reading, watching television, or simply getting away from the busier areas of the house.
And a snug, a term long used in British homes, is just what it sounds like—a smaller, cozy room meant for relaxing and getting comfortable.
Our room has really become a little bit of all three.
My husband works from home here, but with the addition of comfortable seating, I’m also finding myself coming in here with a cup of tea and a book.
Maybe we've created our own Southern version of a snug.
The Room Before
The previous chairs actually have quite a history.
We found them on Craigslist about 25 years ago. They were high-end chairs, but when we bought them, they were upholstered in canary yellow.
Yes—canary yellow!
We eventually had them professionally reupholstered in a much more traditional fabric, and they served us well for many years. I'm not quite ready to sell them. They do have that fabulous Ralph Lauren feel.
I don't dislike the chairs. In fact, I still like them.
But when I started thinking about how I could update this room without changing everything I already loved, the chairs seemed like the obvious place to start.
That's something I think we sometimes forget when decorating our homes.
A room doesn't have to be completely redone to feel fresh.
Sometimes changing one or two larger pieces is enough.
Sometimes it may just simply mean “shopping your home” and moving things around to get a fresh look.
It may just mean a new lovely pillow for the season.
Updating a Traditional Den Without Starting Over
The new striped chairs from Birch Lane immediately changed the feel of the room.
The lighter upholstery provides contrast against all of the warm wood, and the subtle stripe adds pattern without competing with the traditional rug or everything happening on the bookcases.
Most importantly, the chairs still look appropriate for the room.
I didn't want something that suddenly made the den feel trendy or disconnected from the rest of our home.
Instead, they gave me exactly what I was hoping for—a lighter, fresher look while maintaining the classic feel.
Creating a Collected Look
I've been talking more about collected interiors because it's the way I've always decorated, even before I had a name for it.
A collected room shouldn't look as if everything was purchased at once.
Our den certainly wasn't.
The bookcases hold books, family photographs, blue and white porcelain, framed artwork, small antiques, and things we've accumulated through the years.
Not everything matches.
Not everything is new.
And that's precisely why I like it.
The fireplace is another example. The equestrian artwork, blue and white porcelain, brass sconces, magnolia stems, and smaller framed pieces have been layered together over time.
A collected home is always evolving.
Adding something new doesn't mean everything old needs to go.
A Touch of Ralph Lauren Style
There's also a bit of a Ralph Lauren aesthetic happening in this room, although that wasn't something I deliberately set out to create.
It's really the combination of traditional elements that gives it that feeling.
Warm wood. Books. Brass. Equestrian details. A richly patterned rug. Classic upholstery. Blue and white porcelain. Artwork and accessories that look as if they've been collected rather than purchased as a set.
Ralph Lauren interiors have always done this beautifully. Rooms feel layered and established but still comfortable enough to actually live in.
That's the balance I want in our home.
I love beautiful rooms, but I don't want rooms that feel precious.
Adding a Small Side Table
We also added a small marble-top side table between the chairs.
Its size works perfectly here because it doesn't crowd the seating area, but there's enough surface space for a drink, a small stack of books, or a decorative piece.
The marble and brass also bring in another material without adding visual weight.
For styling, I kept things simple with books and one of my blue and white pieces.
It's another example of mixing something new with things you already own.
Creating a Comfortable Reading Area
Perhaps the biggest surprise from this little update is how much more we're actually using this side of the room.
The chairs aren't just there to fill the space anymore.
They've created a true seating area.
I can pull a book from the bookcase, make a cup of tea, and settle in for a while. It's become one of my favorite places in the house to read.
That's another reason I'm warming up to calling this room our snug.
It isn't just a home office or formal study anymore. It's somewhere we genuinely want to spend time.
Classic Design Stands the Test of Time
One thing this room continues to reinforce for me is how well classic, traditional design ages.
We've lived with this room for many years, and we still adore it.
The wood paneling isn't new. The rug isn't new. The bookcases aren't new. Many of the accessories have been here for years.
Yet replacing two chairs and adding one small table made the entire space feel refreshed.
That's one of the reasons I've never been interested in completely changing our home every time a new decorating trend comes along.
If you start with things you genuinely love—good furniture, classic patterns, meaningful accessories, books, artwork, antiques, and pieces collected through the years—you can make small changes as your taste evolves.
You don't have to start over.
Traditional Den Decorating Ideas to Try in Your Home
If you'd like to create this same cozy, collected feeling in a den, study, library, or snug of your own, start with what you already have.
A few things that work especially well in our room are comfortable upholstered seating, books, warm wood tones, traditional patterns, brass accents, blue and white porcelain, artwork, family photographs, and a mix of old and new pieces.
Don't worry about making everything match.
In fact, I'd argue that a room becomes much more interesting when it doesn't.
Let the room evolve as you find things you love.
A Den Made for Living
Our den still looks like the room we've loved for years.
It just feels better.
The new seating brightened the darker wood, gave us a comfortable reading area, and made the room feel more inviting without taking away any of its character.
It's still our study.
It's definitely a den.
And perhaps now it's also our snug.
Whatever we decide to call it, it's a room that feels collected, comfortable, and very much like home.
