What is the Pinterest Challenge?

Each month, we are given either a topic or a photo for inspiration. Think in terms of looking through Pinterest for inspiration. That is how Cindy gets inspired by the challenge. If it is photo inspiration, she visits the source and asks if they'd like to be our inspiration for the monthly challenge. It's that simple! It's such a fun post each month.

This month, we are recreating fall styling for either shelves or a mantel. I have opted to style the mantel in our family room. This month's inspiration comes from Michele at Vintage Home Designs. I am new to Michele's home and blog. It's beautiful, full of lovely vintage styling ideas for your collections.

5 Simple Elements to Decorate a Cozy Fall Mantel

There’s just something about fall that makes me want to cozy up my home. When the air turns crisp and the leaves start to change, my mantel is always the first place I decorate. It sets the tone for the entire season and welcomes family and friends with warmth.

The good news? You don’t need to overcomplicate mantel styling. With just a few thoughtful touches, you can create a beautiful autumn focal point in your living room. Today I’m sharing 5 simple elements to decorate a cozy fall mantel that blend timeless style with a touch of seasonal charm.

1. Statement Piece

Every mantel needs an anchor, and for me, that’s always a chinoiserie ginger jar. Its timeless blue-and-white pattern instantly draws the eye and adds a classic, collected feel. A statement piece like this gives you a foundation to build the rest of your décor around.

2. Natural Touches

Nature always inspires the best seasonal decorating. This year I clipped dried hydrangeas from our yard and tucked them into my chinoiserie jar. They bring in soft texture, muted fall color, and an effortless organic feel. You could also use branches, grasses, or even fall leaves gathered on a walk.

I'll be sharing soon about how I dry my hydrangeas for extended use in our home.

3. Layering for Depth

Layering is the secret to a mantel that feels full and inviting. I used a mix of plates on stands, stacked books, and decorative objects to create height and interest. By varying textures and levels, the arrangement feels curated rather than cluttered.

The wooden base layered under the ginger jar is from the thrift store. It's the top of an old butter churn.

The ironstone plate is a thrift store find. The soft sage green plates are lovely for the season. They're from years ago at Marshalls. I have quite the collection of odd plates.

I always decorate with books. I'll be honest, I rarely turn books out with the pages shown. I'm liking it for extra neutral texture. I searched our library shelves for neutral books. I just removed the dust jackets for the time being. You can see my husband's Library Study in this fall home tour.

4. Seasonal Accents

No fall mantel is complete without a nod to the season. I chose wooden pumpkins because they tie in beautifully with my natural theme. Their organic texture and soft tones blend seamlessly with the dried hydrangeas and chinoiserie pieces while still whispering autumn. Homegoods and Marshalls are my go-to for wooden pumpkins.

I've had these chunky wooden candlesticks for years. They tie in nicely with the pumpkins.

5. Warm Ambiance

The final touch is all about the warm glow. I added simple candles for a soft flicker in the evenings and let the subtle metallic shine on the pumpkin stems reflect the light. This element adds warmth, coziness, and that lived-in charm we all crave during fall evenings at home.

Pulling It All Together

As you can see, I adore styling our mantel. If this ended up being the only fall decor in our home, I'd be just fine. I dream of first fires in the fireplace of the season. That may come in late October here in the south.

I've always felt that if our home were a season, it would be fall. It is perhaps my favorite season.

I have no plans to purchase any new fall decor. In fact, last year I donated and gave away to our children for their new homes.

  1. Christy, I love your hydrangeas!! My hydrangeas’ buds froze in the Feb. 2025 freeze, so no blooms for us this year, but I did use last year’s blooms in my shelf post. 🙂 I love how you’ve used the main elements from Michele’s inspiration photograph but pared them down for your mantel. It is so peaceful, pretty and quietly says hello to fall! Lovely with the blue chinoiserie vase…

    Happy decorating for fall,
    Hugs,
    Barb 🙂

  2. Christy, I adore your wood pumpkins, and if I come across any as pretty as yours I’m going to replace my resin pumpkins. Your gorgeous hydranges in those beautiful colors are the crowning touch! Pinning!

  3. Great tips, Christy! I have a hard time putting into words what I’d like to convey, so I admire your gift for explaining things. Those hydrangeas are gorgeous. Love the colors! And I’ve been looking for new throw blankets for our living area and spotted yours. It’s perfect! Thank you for sharing your lovely fall mantel. Bring on the fall! pinned

  4. Christy I adore all of the lovely textures you used on your mantel. The addition of blue pot pulls out similar shades in your fabulous painting. Truly a pretty mantel!

    1. Thanks so very much, Laura! That painting has been a fixture on the mantel for 20 years. Thankfully, it’s classic and we still love it. Definitely not a piece to change out. Happy early fall, Laura!
