Pinterest Hidden Image

How to hang stockings on a mantel without nails. Easy, classic ideas for displaying Christmas stockings and styling a festive holiday mantel.

Decorating for Christmas is one of my favorite ways to usher in the season, and hanging the stockings is always the moment when our home finally feels holiday-ready. But here’s the thing — you don’t need to use nails (or damage your mantel!) to display them beautifully.

This month’s Pinterest Challenge is all about creative ideas with Christmas stockings, and I’m excited to share two simple, nail-free methods I use in our home.

What is the Pinterest Challenge?

Each month, we are given either a topic or a photo for inspiration. Think in terms of looking through Pinterest for inspiration. That is how Cindy gets inspired by the challenge. If it is photo inspiration, she visits the source and asks if they'd like to be our inspiration for the monthly challenge. It's that simple! It's such a fun post each month.

This month, we are sharing all things Christmas stockings! Heidi's home tour is stunning. The red garland of ornaments on the mantel is so festive and striking against the white walls and mantel. I love the whimsical way she hung the stockings with various ribbons, bells, and mistletoe sprigs.

Why Hang Stockings Without Nails?

Whether you have a painted mantel, vintage woodwork, or simply want to avoid holes, nail-free stocking hanging solutions are practical and pretty. No more nails or screwed in cup hooks. Over the years, I’ve refined my methods so the stockings not only hang securely but look full and styled even before Santa arrives.

Today, I’m sharing:

  • How I hang stockings on our family room mantel with decorative stocking hooks
  • How I hang stockings in our breakfast room on a wall-hung coat rack
  • My easy trick for keeping stockings looking full
  • Shopping suggestions for sturdy, stylish stocking holders

Let’s get into it!

Hanging Stockings on the Mantel (Without Nails!)

brass christmas stocking holder

In our family room, I have used the same set of brass stocking hooks for over 20 years — proof that when you invest in classic pieces, they’ll truly last. These hooks simply sit on top of the mantel with a weighted base and curved arm that holds each stocking securely. Yes, I was skeptical at first.

Why I Love This Method

  • No hardware and no holes

  • Stylish and timeless

  • Sturdy enough to hold heavier stockings

  • Easy to rearrange or remove after the holidays

This year, I added velvet ribbon to the stockings for a layered, old-world Christmas look. The texture of velvet against the greenery and garland feels nostalgic and classic — just how I love our holiday home.

Hanging Stockings on a Wall-Mounted Coat Rack

Not all stockings have to hang from the mantel! One of my favorite displays lives in our breakfast room.

We made a simple wall-mounted coat rack using a piece of wood salvaged from a 100-year-old armoire that belonged to my husband’s grandparents. We restored the armoire for our dining room, and the leftover wood was too special to discard — so it became a functional and sentimental piece in our home.

Most of the year, the rack displays my collection of cutting boards. During Christmas, the hooks become a charming spot to hang our stockings, cross-stitched by my late mother-in-law.

Why This Method Works

  • Perfect for adding stockings to rooms without mantels

  • Repurposes an existing rack or hook system

  • Allows for sentimental or DIY touches

  • Great for kids’ rooms, guest rooms, or kitchens

  • Also, nail-free if the rack is already installed

I'm doing more Santa and gingerbread houses in the kitchen this year because of our granddaughter, so I thought the stockings would be fun in here.

A Simple Trick for Perfectly Styled Stockings

Want your stockings to hang fuller before Santa does his magic?

Before I did this little trick, I struggled with getting the stockings to hang forward.

Stuff them with tissue paper!

I used three sheets of tissue per stocking. It gives shape, fullness, and helps the stocking hang beautifully!

This little trick makes such a difference!

Shopping Suggestions: Stocking Holders That Actually Hold Weight

Not all stocking hangers are created equal. If yours tend to slide or topple, look for options with:

  • These flat holders have great reviews and say they hold up to 6 pounds. They come in various color options.

  • These are similar in how they work to what I have. Just measure the thickness of your mantel before ordering to ensure a proper fit.

  • Like the above holders, but in solid colors.

  • Minimal look with great reviews for handling a filled stocking. Just measure for mantel fit.

  • Excellent reviews for this scroll-style stocking holder. They come in many colors.
  • Mantel clips are expandable.
  • You can always use Command hooks! You can hang them on the top and cover them with greenery or place them on the underside of the mantel.
