Do you love thrift store shopping like I do?

Does your husband sweetly roll his eyes as you bring in your goodies with the grocery bags as if you can hide a large, gross silver tray?

Yes, that is me!

He is kind of digging my $4.50 side table from Goodwill.

This is what she looked like when I placed her on the porch.  I kind of wish I'd bought the other one now.

Yes, there were two!  Boo!  I could have had the other one at the other end of the porch between the two wicker gliders.  Oh, well!  One of these days I will learn!

You can find the full porch tour HERE.

I had previously used Annie Sloan Chalk paint on the covered porch pieces.  I did this after much research and asking questions from the gurus of chalk paint.  You simply paint and do nothing else.  I love chalk paint and have been using it all over the house for various projects, but just don't like the look outside for my furniture, especially when outdoor furniture requires constant spring cleaning during pollen season.

I am in the process of repainting those pieces in quality satin outdoor paint.  I wanted the same Duck Egg Blue that I used in the Annie Sloan Chalk paint.  I have been a devoted follower of Altar'd Designs.  They have a wealth of furniture painting information!

One great thing!  They have created an ASCP color comparison chart to Behr and Sherwin Williams colors.  I simply took the colors with me to Lowes and they mixed the Sherwin Williams color that corresponded to ASCP's Duck Egg Blue.  The Sherwin Williams color is 6213.  It's a pretty good match!  I am very pleased with it.  I am also very happy now with the durability the outdoor paint offers.

I have already removed the glass top.  I really like glass top tables on the porch.  They are great for sweating drink glasses without the need to worry about ruining the finish!

I cleaned the grime off the entire table and just lightly sanded the table top with my rotary sander.

I removed the bottom base to get a nice, clean overall paint finish.

Also on OSH!  Summer on the Screened Porch

This paint has primer built-in so I was able to skip a step!  Yay!!  I painted two coats all over, but did a third on the top and bottom shelf.  It covered beautifully!  I highly recommend the Valspar outdoor paint with primer!

I just love this color!

Our screened porch is our favorite room in the house during outdoor weather months!

You can find the full porch tour HERE.

What a fun project! That fabric is adorable. It sure takes a lot of patience to paint the spindles… a labor of love. But when your results are a blessing, it all feels worth it in the end. Thanks for sharing – thinking about that new Mommy rocking away right now:)

    Hi,
I love the porch tour. It’s so pretty! I am wondering what you used to hang the items you have on the brick. We have a brick fireplace and I want to hang something above it, however, I don’t want to drill or cause permanent damage. Thanks!

Thank you so much!!! You can by brick hanging clips. I first started using them at our old house to hang a Christmas wreath. Unfortunately the brick work on this house doesn’t allow enough of a groove for it to grab. My husband had to use a cement screw. ~Christy (I’d check Amazon…they have everything!)

Hi! I saw your picture on Pinterest and had to comment. I have the entire set of end tables and coffee table just like yours from my grandparents. It had been in their house for at least 32 years bc that’s how old I am. They are in my house now painted white. I love them! You won’t find octagonal furniture nowadays! 🙂

I had the end tables and the coffee table too, found at curbside. Brought them home and dang if my dog didn’t eat the bottom out of the coffee table. Broke the glass of one end table moving; the coffee table would have been fixed but didn’t fit in our new home. This table barely fits in (decor wise) with the rest of our living room — and now I know exactly how to remedy that! Even DH liked this and to drag him away from Farmville and have him look at something for interior decoration and have him LIKE it? That’s amazing!

I think you could, Jan as long as it is in a covered, protected area. I’m not sure if you can with paint…but look into adding an outdoor poly over it to protect the exposed areas. If it is covered…I think you are safe! I think it will look great! Thanks by the way!!

I used to have that same table, before I went to more Traditional with dark cherry, Queen Anne style legs.
Now I wonder what I did with that furniture? Hmm! Must have given it to somebody or sold at one of my yard sales at former home. Did you have to remove any old furniture polish before painting and what did you use to do that? Did you put any type of sealer on after your paint dried?

I just cleaned it really well and lightly sanded just the top. It just depends on the amount of shine as to how much I sand before. If using ASCP there is no prep work other than cleaning unless the piece is greatly damaged! Thanks bunches for stopping by Betty! ~Christy

I’m just now getting started with the chalk paint. Can you explain why you chose the outdoor paint over the chalk paint? What are the disadvantages besides no wax?

    Reply
    • Christy says

      June 3, 2013 at 7:14 AM

Hi, Nancy! You do not wax chalk paint pieces for outdoor use. It does not allow the piece to breathe properly. I have been told by several dealers that you simply paint and let it weather naturally. For the most part, I have decided that I do not like the look for this. When you paint a piece with chalk paint it is an extremely matte finish. Every time you wipe it to clean (pollen), paint pigment comes off with it. Several folks say that you can go over it with possibly an outdoor poly. I didn’t want to take the risk with this and have to do extra steps. I’ve used outdoor paint before and it lasts for many years in a covered area like my porches. I just prefer the outdoor paint for furniture applications…one step and done since it includes primer. It is a personal preference. It easily wipes clean without damaging the paint surface. Loving the Valspar that I used in this post. I’m in the process of repainting all the outdoor pieces with this paint and color….5 to be exact. I hope this has helped. Christy 🙂

So pretty Christy! I came across a site last year that gave replicates of the ASCP colors…don’t remember what it was now though! But what a great idea for those that like her colors.
I have had good luck with my outdoor pieces but they have all been covered in poly. I’ve never left anything without a coating as suggested by them for outdoor pieces though! But this is good to know. I have a few more things to paint for my porch and screened porch so will definitely keep this in mind. Your little table is beautiful…and yes, you should see my hubby as I roll up with my thrift store purchases. 😉 lol Ha, did that today as a matter of fact. Got some really great stuff for a total of about $10.50. 😉

Love it! And I see it became part of the décor until it was painted.

I’ve commented before on your site about how overwhelmed I feel about decorating for 1. my house has an eclectic left over college days mishmash feel (we bought 2 pieces of furniture together the rest is pre-marriage) 2. don’t know where to start in my humble 2k sq ft home with all this ‘stuff’ (I am having a garage sale to help get rid of some stuff!) 3. limited budget (sahm)

Where in the home would you recommend I begin?

Hi! Before you sell your things in a yard sale…really evaluate the pieces. Can they be unified with a paint job! Maybe it would work in another room….shop your house! I’d start in the room you use the most and would make you the most happy like maybe the family room or master bedroom. Even accessories can come to life with a can of spray paint. Go to Pinterest and do a search on painting furniture. You will see all kinds of inspiration to get you going! Altar’d Designs online has some great ebooks for purchase on getting started. Thanks so much, Kim!!! No problem at all on the cost! LOL!!! It is pricey, but is a primer/paint combo in 1! I am pretty sure it was $38. I bought a gallon because I have several pieces to paint. I hardly made a dent in the can with the console table and this side table that I have repainted thus far. I probably could have gotten by with just a quart. The paint went on fabulously with no odor. Kids better watch out because I may just paint them too! LOL!!

Wow, that is so beautiful. Uh.. go back right now and get the other one!!!! Love that color and I wrote it down for when I can buy paint. For now I have to settle for white flat or a boo boo I picked up years ago at HD and it is similar, but it is a latex enamel (ugh), but I wish it was lighter like yours & acrylic. But then I am ignorant of the differences in latex & acryllic. I remember artist’s paints years ago were acryllic and you could thin them with water……

I wish one of you smart, experienced gals (hint) would do a little class on such…. about the different names of types of paints.

AD: Call me quirky, but I love a great grocery sto AD: Call me quirky, but I love a great grocery store. I could explore forever. Ashlyn and I enjoy cooking together so shopping for our favorite steak taco night dinner was the perfect opportunity to visit our new @foodlion in the Greenville, SC area. We are no stranger to Food Lion! We shop there when in NC while visiting our family beach cottage. The extra fresh produce and meats section always blows us away. Food Lion prides itself on keeping prices low and passes savings to its customers. Be sure to sign up for an MVP card in-store & online. Swipe to see more + our yummy dinner! Also, check out my stories! Good morning! Another gorgeous day before the rain Good morning! Another gorgeous day before the rain and cold creep back in. The weather is a big tease around here! A tip & a question! Please read below...help a girl out!

🌸 Do yourself a favor, when you go to the grocery store....pick up some fresh flowers. They are inexpensive and instantly brighten your day. Change out the water every couple of days and most will last a week. Cut a little off the stems as well.

👁 I recently had an eye appointment. My doc wrote a prescription for me to get progressive readers. Folks, She said that I need 2.5s! I’m in a 1.75. It’s such a pain. Here’s my question. I can no longer pluck my eyebrows with my magnifying mirror! 🤣 The 52 struggle is real! What’s a girl to do? Become Bert or go to the salon. I don’t wax because it’s too irritating. @ashlyn_little offered to pluck them! 🤣 Anyone else in the same boat?

Favorite @lovechicos look! My So Slimming Girlfriend jeans are on sale! Today is also the last day of their first-ever warehouse sale!

Curious? Do you make your bed daily? We do! We usu Curious? Do you make your bed daily? We do! We usually have a last one out rule. I just can’t walk in the bedroom with an unmade bed. My dresser may have a pile of folded laundry for a couple of days, but that bed is made! That Amazon blanket is linked in stories. It’s soooo good!

This is perhaps my favorite look for our master bedroom! Soft toile, linen and leopard print bedding and blankets are so cozy! http://liketk.it/3953P #liketkit @liketoknow.it #StayHomeWithLTK #LTKstyletip @liketoknow.it.home

I have not been this excited about the weekend sin I have not been this excited about the weekend since last weekend! Ha, ha! Happy Friday! No big plans here, but I’m still trying to dress up for a date night in on the weekend. We’ve been eating a lot in the dining room lately. It’s a cozy space with the twinkle lights that I don’t have the heart
to take down. It’s like feeling like we are in an actual restaurant opposed to the daily meals at the kitchen table. Just that little extra effort makes a difference. #ad

Loving these separates from @lovechicos This lightweight chevron sweater is perfect for now and spring. The lines are so slimming with the flowy ¾ length sleeve. Guess what! My So Slimming Girlfriend Jeans are on sale now thru February 25th! All full-priced jeans are $59!

Been watching the news before cooking dinner and e Been watching the news before cooking dinner and enjoying a glass of wine. It’s heartbreaking seeing what’s going on in Texas. The people, the animals....I pray that everyone finds warmth, food and water tonight. It makes me look ahead to warmer days and carefree times of summer. This photo was last summer....I’m ready for outdoor weather. 🙏

Never regret anything that made you smile. – Mar Never regret anything that made you smile. – Mark Twain

I’ve been on a no sugar or anything processed lifestyle change going on 7 weeks except for that weekend cheat meal. Spent an afternoon doing a little shopping and indulging in a vanilla chai latte with my daughter, and it made my day! No regrets on the sweet splurge. #ad

This outfit with pieces from @lovechicos has been on repeat the last couple of weeks! I don’t tend to wear bright colors like this in the winter but let me tell you…. this sweater changed my mind! I am sharing 4 fun looks on the blog today with some of my favorite @lovechicos pieces. #lovechicos
