Browsing Facebook Marketplace has become one of my favorite pastimes. It's like thrift store hunting at your fingertips. It's perfect for when you are looking for something specific. This Facebook Marketplace lamp was a low‑effort, high‑impact win. Our study required better task lighting, so I kept an eye on the Marketplace until this classic ceramic base became available. I knew it was the one—it pulls the colors from our rug and absolutely glows against the pine paneling.

Best part? It needed very little: a deep clean, a simple rewire (first time—more on that below!), and a quick touch‑up on the brass with Rub ’n Buff in Gold Leaf. I borrowed a block‑print shade from our family room to test size/shape; I may order a twin or go classic with a pleated white. No rush—good decorating takes time.

lamp rewiring kit

Supplies Used

  • Gentle cleaner + soft cloths/paper towels
  • Rub ’n Buff (Gold Leaf)
  • Lamp rewiring kit (UL‑listed): socket, cord set
  • Screwdriver(s) (flat + Phillips)
  • Small adjustable wrench
  • Smart bulb (warm white 2700–3000K for cozy task light)
  • Lampshade (testing block‑print; option: pleated white)
  • Optional: painter’s tape (label parts), cotton swabs for detail gilding

How-To

Clean & Assess

  • Dust thoroughly.

  • Wipe the base with a gentle cleaner; avoid soaking labels/felt bases.

Disassemble

  • Remove the shade, harp, and finial.

  • Loosen the socket shell to expose the wiring.

  • Snap a quick reference photo of the internal layout.

Refresh the Brass

  • Apply a tiny amount of Rub ’n Buff (Gold Leaf) with a paper towel or cotton swab.

  • Buff gently for a soft, restored sheen.

  • I had to do several coats.

Rewire

  • Pull the old cord out; keep any hardware that fits the lamp well.

  • Feed the new cord through the base and up the threaded rod.

  • Connect wires to the new socket per the kit:

  • Tighten screws; tuck wires neatly; reassemble the socket.

  • Reinstall (or swap) the harp and finial.

TIP: While I used the new socket and cord, I used old parts as well due to fitting things together.

Be sure to check my Instagram for the reel, which will feature more of the rewiring process.

Bulb & Shade

  • Add a smart bulb; pair to your app and add to a room group.

  • Test shade shape/scale (tapered drum or empire is classic).

  • Fine‑tune height with harp size; the shade should cover the socket but reveal a bit of neck.

Results & Styling Notes

  • Color story: The lamp’s palette echoes the Persian‑style rug; brass details tie into the chandelier and sconces.

  • Function: Smart bulbs mean we can schedule evening glow and desk‑task scenes.

  • Shade choice: The borrowed block‑print is perfect for now; a pleated white would lean traditional library—both are wins.

I tried several shades. Cleo, our kitten, recently broke one of our bedside lamps. The shade is still great. I was hoping to use it here, but the size was too small. I borrowed a shade from this thrift store lamp makeover, and it is perfect! I'm contemplating buying this shade or possibly a white, pleated shade in this style. Regardless, I think the size and shape are a great fit.

The wooden base is in great shape. If it had needed a little refreshing, I would have done what I did with this thrift store lamp.

I've started decorating for Christmas. We've had two really cold days in a row here, which means we have been turning the fireplaces on for extra warmth. Cleo is fascinated with them.

I am just overjoyed with this $40 lamp find. This is a great, heavy lamp. It's the perfect touch for some added eclectic charm for our English Country study.

I don’t shop on Marketplace, why? I have no idea! Your lamp find and redo are perfect for your space. Another thing I don’t do is use rub-n-buf enough. 🙂

    1. Marketplace doesn’t replace the fun of thrift shopping, but if looking for a specific piece or collectible….It’s my go to! Rub ‘n Buff hides well! Thank you….I am so happy with the lamp.

  4. What an amazing find, and a lovely update. Isn’t rub ‘n buff the best? That shade is darling, too. I have several of them in different colors!

I love hearing from you!
