5 Tips to Keep Your Floors Clean

Thanks for sharing!

This post is sponsored by Bona but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

I will admit that the first tip to keeping your floors AND home clean would be to send your kids off to college. Ha, ha! Know that isn't funny, but it's kind of true.

Seriously! My kids just moved to college last weekend. This is our second year of being empty nesters just for the school year. It's hard….we miss them terribly, but it is life and we are surviving.

Did you hear that? Yes, you can hear a pin drop these days.

Every August after the kids head off to school, I start cleaning and organizing like a mad woman. It's kind of like my start of a new year…..not the typical January.

As an empty nester, I thrive on getting the house in order at this time. I do a very thorough deep clean. Over the last few days, I have washed all mattress pads, sheets and bedding on all 4 beds. Now things are fresh for when the kids return home for visits with their friends.

Let's get to the 5 Tips to Keep Your Floors Clean.

I've thought about this a lot and it's really simple if you can follow through.

  1. Place a door mat or rug at each exterior door. Keeping one on the inside gives you double protection for trapping unwanted dust, dirt and debris.
  2. Remove your shoes when you enter your home.
  3. Keep areas free of unnecessary clutter on the floor so you can easily clean around furniture, plants and rugs.
  4. Do a good clean once per week of your floors with a vacuum and mop.
  5. Run a quick dust mop around your bare floors everyday or two to prevent dust and dirt buildup.

Keeping a good mat or rug on the outside and inside of each exterior door will help cut down on excessive dirt and debris on the home you've just worked so hard to clean.

I prefer to take my shoes off whenever I enter our home. Encourage other family members to do the same. This is where I fudge a bit. I never ask a guest to remove their shoes when they come into our home. There is nothing wrong with that. I just choose to not do that. Guests are not typically a daily occurrence, so I can deal with the occasional tracking in. Now if it's the neighborhood kids coming over to routinely hangout….then yes….I have them remove their shoes!

If you want to always have visitors remove their shoes. Then make them comfortable!

  • Answer the door shoeless
  • Provide seating by the door to remove shoes
  • Place an attractive boot tray by the door for shoes
  • Go the extra mile and provide an assortment of fun slippers

  1. I like this kind of flat mop because its pad is removable and washable and this kind of mop can remove dog hair, dust faster and easier. Thanks for these useful tips. Love your blog and love these useful cleaning tips! Thanks!

  2. I am guilty of not cleaning my house every week, and I know that’s why there’s such a huge dust pile-up on my wooden floor. I will endeavour to do better and follow the tips you’ve provided.

  3. Removing shoes before entering a home is what we’ve been practicing since forever and the whole family has been so strict about it. Anyways, one of my favorite cleaning stunt is using coconut husk for our wood flooring, still works everytime! 🙂

  4. Oh! Would love to win this – I’ve been thinking about switching to Bona from Swiffer and wondering which would do a better job. My favorite cleaning trick is to use Mr. Clean Eraser pads to clean the tub. I had been scrubbing with a scrubber, and found that the Magic Eraser works much better and is faster to remove that yucky buildup.

    1. Great tip with the eraser! I need to try that. Bona has a much larger cleaning surface which gets the job done faster!

  5. I use a dryer sheet on the baseboards so it repels dust and dog hair longer than a wet cloth does.

  6. My favorite cleaning tip is to get a steam mop! That things kills it every time! I have never been one to scrub my floors and this makes it so simple. Thanks for all the tips!

  7. I need to read as many tips as possible because I have a terrible time keeping the floors clean. We have a white cat that sheds and it is an almost impossible task.So I guess my tip would be daily dusting in the areas where he lives.

  8. I use the dusting pads to go over the base molding along the floor when I dust clean the floor. Having a black dog with white moldings creates a constant cleaning chore but this does the trick!

  9. You’re on to something with the rugs tip.
The whole purpose of rugs are to act as filters between our homes and the dirty outdoors.
Just like any other filter, rugs need to be cleaned out every so often.

Love your blog and love these tips! Thanks!

  10. My favorite cleaning trick is to use a pillowcase over ceiling fan blades to wipe off dust and trap it inside the pillowcase so it doesn’t fly all over.

  11. I find the bona useful with the dry cloth to clean molding at the ceiling , I usually do this before I do the floor its perfect with the long handle.

I love hearing from you!
