This month my project is a Beachy Thrift Store Tray Makeover.
I found this large, sturdy tray at Goodwill recently. It was only $2.95.
Trays are one of my favorite things to find in thrift stores. They have so many uses from strictly decorative to functional.
Before – It looks handmade. It even had a signature.
Fast forward 3 coats later of Chateau Grey by Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.
Next I used the edge of the inner part of the tray as a guide and taped off an area to do a narrow pinstripe all around. I didn't measure. I just eyed it. I wasn't going for perfection here.
I printed this adorable crab graphic from The Graphics Fairy found HERE. Print the graphic.
Follow my easy transfer method using oil pastels HERE.
Now you are left with the image outline to fill in with paint. You can go as detailed as you like, I chose simple.
I painted the pinstripe and the top edge of the tray in a creamy white craft paint. I painted 3 coats.
The tray even has handles.
The crab has multiple coats in various areas in Smitten by Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paints. It's a wonderful beachy, peach color.
I decided to go with a beachy theme with the crab and these colors so we could take this to our family beach cottage on Caswell Beach, NC. We share the home with my husband's 2 sisters and their spouses.
Our bedroom upstairs is tiny. We share it with our 2 kids. It is so small that the large dresser does not fit in our bedroom. There is a perfect little nook in the hallway for it. It's like the dresser was made for it. This is where our kids keep their clothes. This tray is going to sit on top of the dresser to protect the top from wallets, keys, phones, etc. Being such a small space, it is imperative to have things like this so everything has a place.
I do plan to go to my home improvement center and have a piece of Plexiglas cut for the center to protect the paint.
The entire tray is protected with 3 coats of spray poly in satin. It is so easy to use.
I'll be taking the tray to the beach spring break. I'll be sure to add a photo here while there.
Now head on over and check out the other fabulous five thrifty project for this month!
I'd love for you to follow along on social media!

What a great makeover! We live on the water and it would be an easy project for the spring. I have an old holiday tray that desperately needs updating. I would put this on our wine rack with glasses and an ice bucket.
I love your tray makeover. I have two similar that I purchased unfinished at Walmart for a oouple bucks and one I spray painted white and the other I stained. I am going to change them sometime soon to your design. I am beachy/coastal all the way…. I mean since I grew up and now retired here in my beautiful Florida. We are now getting the misty, overcast weather right now. Supposed to be sunny this afternoon again though. Still dark here at 5:38 AM…….. crossing my fingers for sun EARLY! (chuckles)
Your tray is TOO cute! I love all things beachy. It’s so classic and gorgeous… great job!
Love this makeover Christy! I am so ready for summer…this tray will be perfect for serving at the beach!
Very nice transformation, great beach feel.
Cindy
Thanks so much, Cindy!
Christy, That tray is designer decor now! I love everything about it. You would never know it’s the same tray. I’m ready for the beach. Supposed to snow here again today. I missed a week of college and the school kids have been out of school for 8 straight days now. I’m going to be on the lookout for trays at the thrift store now. Thanks for the idea and for joining the team!
Thanks so much. I’m ready for the beach, too. We missed 1 day last Tuesday. Then just a 2 hour delay the rest of the week due to the extreme temps. Late afternoon today, we have a big storm coming in. Getting ready to head out for bread and milk! LOL!
That is beautiful Christy! perfect color and choice for the Season! This was a lot of fun and I look forward to more thrifty makeovers with you gals.
Thanks so much, Debbie! This is going to be such a fun monthly tour!
