I’ve got a new favorite spray paint, y’all, and it’s a game changer for upcycling thrift store finds! This moody gray-blue color has completely transformed a wicker table I found, and I’m excited to show you how a little spray paint can take a piece from drab to fab.
Supplies Used
- a vacuum with a brush attachment
- damp rag
- spray paint
- spray nozzle
- drop cloth
How-To
Prep Is Key!

Make sure the surface is clean and dry before spraying. Wipe down the wicker with a damp cloth to remove dust or dirt.
I find that a vacuum with a brush attachment helps remove dirt and dust from all those crevices.
If the table is old or worn, lightly sand it to help the paint adhere better.

Wicker Table Repair
If your wicker needs repair, you may find this post helpful. I am also using the same spray paint in this gorgeous green color!
Spray Thin Layers

Spray in thin, even coats. It’s tempting to pile on the paint, but trust me, several light coats will give you a smoother, more professional finish. Don’t rush it—patience is your friend!
Spray Paint Tip
I will typically use pieces of old cans of spray paint to “prime” the piece if it is one that may absorb the paint. Here I used a light aqua color that I've had forever. It's a great way to use it up and have to use less of your main color. If a spray nozzle will fit your can, use it! You will get less backspray on your hand and it's just easier to spray.

Use the Right Paint
Where will you be using your piece of furniture? If it will be used outdoors, just make sure it is rated for that application.

I swear by this spray paint for its rich color and durability. It’s perfect for furniture like wicker. I typically use a satin finish, but I took a chance on the gloss. Oh, my! It is gorgeous.

Make sure to turn your table upside down when painting. This is very important! It allows you to get the paint into all those grooves and crevices.
Allow your table to dry thoroughly before moving it, especially with the gloss finish. Let it dry for at least 24 hours before placing any protective glass on it. If using glass on top, which I recommend, be sure to use these little discs between the glass and wicker.
Styling the Wicker Table

Once the table was painted and fully dried, I couldn’t wait to get it styled for the front porch. I went for a classic, timeless look that mixes perfectly with the moody gray-blue.

Faux tulips in a chic vase add a pop of fresh elegance, and I’ve incorporated my favorite chinoiserie pieces—garden stools and ginger jars—to bring in that timeless charm. Together, they create a welcoming and beautiful space, perfect for enjoying those warmer days ahead.

Whether you’re sprucing up a thrift store find or refreshing a piece you already own, I hope this gives you some inspiration to create your own beautiful and budget-friendly pieces. Let me know if you’ve tried a similar project or if you have any favorite spray painting tips of your own!
