Hand-painted Garden Sign

I found a large sign at the thrift store for $6. Great shape!
I decided to turn it into a Hand-Painted Garden Sign for the detached garage and potting shed.
I'm sure you recognize all of these pretty faces! Lots of talent smiling back at you.
Here's the before of my $6 sign from the thrift store.
The letters are vinyl on top of paint. I used my putty knife to take off the letters.
I then sanded to get as smooth a finish as I could. This in not really wood, but pressed particle board stuff. It's a heavy sign since so large. I then used white indoor/outdoor spray paint with a built-in primer in Satin to paint the base of the board.
- Pick out your font and play around with the size to get it to fit your project.
- Print it.
- Tape it together.
- Tape to the board
- With a ball-point pen, trace the top of the letters to leave an imprint. Press down!
- Remove paper and you are left with a tracing of the letters to paint.
I painted 3 coats of Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Enchanted. I used various sizes of artist brushes.
Then I used Miss Mustard Seed's tutorial for adding shadows to letters. I did this with Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint in Relic. Then I lightly distressed the letters. Then I applied one coat of glaze. Using light pressure with a rag, you remove it. This leaves a look of texture. I sealed it with 2 coats of outdoor poly in satin.
It fills in this space nicely.
I'm one of those where one project leads to another. Adding this sign here has made me want to redo this little side porch. There is a concrete floor. I think I'm going to paint a diamond pattern on it. Stay tuned for that project and before photos!

This is a great upcycle. I have signs that I’ve taken to the Thrift Store….now I’m wondering if I should go and buy them back!? 😉 Thanks for the fabulous inspiration.
So much better now! I can’t wait for the weather to finally warm up so I can start working on my front entry too! XO
Thanks so much, Christy! I haven’t told my hubby my plans! 🙂

Thanks Nancy!
Love it! Great step by step instructions on how to make your own sign! Now, I’ve gotta go check my shed and see if I can find a piece of wood to create my own. Appreciate the inspiration!
Thanks so much! Happy painting. 🙂

I have a sign sitting in my garage just waiting to be painted. You have inspired me. LOVE that you shaded the letters, that one thing really brings your sign to life! Garden perfect!
Thanks, Yvonne! Looking forward to sprucing up that area now!
Great transformation! So pretty!
Thanks so much!
I need to keep my eye open for signs in the thrift shop to makeover. Using pressure from a pen when tracing is a great transfer method that I haven’t tried. Thanks for sharing the video to learn to add highlights to letters. I definitely want to watch that soon.
Christy, I never thought about transferring letter by pressure! Genius!!! What a creative tour. 🙂 Jeanette
