Shutter Jewelry Organizer

Thanks for sharing!

I'm a little embarrassed to show you the ugly before photo. Ten years ago I put up this very ugly utilitarian men's belt hanger in our closet to hang a few necklaces on. I saw it in a magazine and thought…..great idea!

Well that was back before costume jewelry was such a huge thing….obsession in my case!

What I am showing you is not some new blow your mind idea….it's been around.

Thrift Store Shutters make the perfect jewelry organizer!

BUT it was the perfect project for me and my messiness for this month's installment of our Thrift Store Makeover Challenge!

Guess what! We have a new member to our group. I am so excited to have Gail with us from My Repurposed Life. Welcome Gail and all of your creativity!

I've moved my thrift store stash up into the attic. It's a large well lite space. I'd had this pair of shutters for a while and knew it was time to use them.

I got this pair of wooden, interior shutters for $2!!!! I cleaned them up really well. They were really dirty!

I sprayed them just on one side with white spray paint. I let them dry overnight.

Cringe…..messy before! I know this is awful. A few necklaces have even been broken in the tangle. It's so heavy that it's starting to hang away from the wall and it's secured with anchors!

It was always such a chore trying to find a piece of jewelry either here or in two other boxes.

I used 2 packs of these {affiliate link} Command Strips to hang the 2 shutters. Please follow the instructions on the product so they will stick to your surface and be secure.

My closet was very difficult to photograph….tight space by the door and no natural light. Sorry for the not so great photos.

At first I was searching for s-hooks, but that was going to be too expensive. I think a 4 pack at Walmart was $1.97. That would have added up quickly.

I'm glad I didn't get them now, they would have really been too thick to work.

Cheap old paper clips worked in a pinch. I'm actually glad that this happened by chance! Just bend them out. I placed the smaller hook into the slat. The larger hook faces out to hold the jewelry. Perfect!

This also works great to hang your earrings with the hook back.

If you notice, the two shutters are hung right on top of each other. No measuring or leveling to hang. I just butted them up against the door jam.

After I had it finished, I was so excited that I sent a cell pic to my teen daughter at school….to see after school of course. She was even excited!

My hubby even noticed it!

  1. This turned out to be easier than I would have expected from the picture. I love when household items can be repurposed like that and it’s super clever you thought of that! I’m definitely going to keep my eyes out for some shutters so I can do this for my house. Thanks for sharing!

  2. That turned out so awesome! I bet you love going to pick out your jewelry for the day now. I use shutters as a backdrop in my booth and I use paper clips the same way to hang things from it. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Julie! A lot of them are old and my daughter and I share. I’m sure when she leaves for college in another year, I’ll have a much smaller collection!

  3. Christy,

wow! that’s a great way to use these shutters. “S” hooks ARE so very expensive, why is that? Your use of paper clips is genius.

thanks so much for the warm welcome, I’m really excited to be part of this group.

You have me envious of your jewelry… not that I wear it, but I have a project that is in need of staging, and I wish I had some great pieces to show off. 😉

  4. This is exactly the kind of closet jewels and baubles holder my oldest daughter is looking to make. Guess I have a weekend project for her now huh? I think I even have the shutter collecting dust right next to the garage door for a fast start.

I love hearing from you!
