Welcome back to Saturdays on the Porch #82! This week has felt like a true January week in every sense—cozy meals, warm layers, a little home life, and plenty of time soaking in the simple things. And just as we were getting into our winter rhythm, Upstate South Carolina decided to keep things interesting… we’re expecting a major ice storm starting around 5 pm today, so we’ve been shifting into “storm prep mode” and getting the house ready just in case the power goes out. I’m sharing a peek at what I've been wearing, cooking, loving around the house, and everything we’re gathering to stay cozy, safe, and prepared.

Isn't Cleo a cutie! She is absolutely spoiled rotten with no boundaries. We've raised a little queen. We are loving the little pillow and blanket update to our bedroom. Either Cleo or Theo knocked over Max's bedside lamp, breaking it. I replaced it with this chinoiserie pair of lamps. Y'all, they are gorgeous!!! They won't be knocked over with the wide base. They are on sale right now!

The Look

I wore this to church last Sunday. I bought this dress several years ago for a wedding where they wanted a more formal guest look. I didn't want to waste money on a dress that I'd get little to no wear out of. I bought this and wore it with silver sandals, a silver clutch (both from Ashlyn's wedding), and rhinestone jewelry. I felt dressed perfectly. Now I can wear the dress to church and more casually. I am wearing a medium dress from this brand. While my dress is no longer available. I've linked several similar items from the same brand.

This sweater is such a fun twist for winter—still cozy, but with personality. I love mixing a playful piece like this into the January wardrobe rotation. It's perfect for the Clemson Basketball season. I am wearing a medium sweater.

This wrap coat is the definition of chic and practical. Warm enough for winter but still looks tailored and pretty—especially with boots for a cold-weather day. I will get 3 season wear out of it. I am wearing a medium. This is not a jacket to wear heavy layers under. The arms are slightly more fitted. I plan to travel with it.

This cardigan is giving all the classic winter vibes—warm, timeless, and perfect for layering. I love a piece that feels slightly “vintage” but is still easy to wear with jeans. I am wearing a medium in the cardigan and Quince blouse. The boots are from last year. They are Born and true to size. I have them in black and brown. They are lightweight and travel well.

As of today, LookOptic still has 25% off on their progressive readers. I am wearing the Evita in pink and the Muse-Mini in gold. Shop my progressives favorites here.

In the Kitchen

Bowl of lentil soup topped with parmesan cheese in a white bowl.

Homemade Lentil Soup

This soup was exactly what the week called for. Warm, hearty, and the kind of meal that feels nourishing and cozy in the best way—especially when the temperatures drop. It's a new to me recipe. It was easy and so flavorful. We got 2 meals out of it, plus a canister in the freezer. It's just the 2 of us.

I am making bread today in preparation for the storm! I use this recipe for the pair of Italian Sourdough Loaves.

I have been struggling with winter dough rising. The house is just too cool. Last night I placed the covered container in the half bath and closed the door. There is a heat vent in there. WOW, thanks for the idea, hubby. It had a great rise this morning. These loaves will have their 2nd rise in about 4 hours…..just in time to bake before the storm.

Winter Storm Prep

When winter weather hits the Upstate, you just never know what you’re going to wake up to. We’ve learned the hard way that it’s best to prepare early—especially if power lines go down or roads become unsafe. Here’s what we’re buying and using this week to get ready for a possible outage:

Theo may not be thrilled about wearing a coat… but it’s too cold to argue with it. He looked absolutely adorable, and I’m calling this a winter win for both of us. He's ready for potty time during the sleet and freezing rain.

Power + Lighting

  • Flashlights (and extra batteries)

  • I got this set of candles last night!
  • LED lanterns for the kitchen/living room. I am using these rechargeable lamps in 2 bathrooms.

  • HALO– This thing is amazing! We keep it in our car. It always has 100% charge when I take it out of the car to use during a storm. This is a must-have!
  • Ryobi has wonderful rechargeable lights. I plan to add this one to our arsenal
  • Battery-powered candles (because cozy matters 😉), I also use my Christmas candles.

  • Fully charged power banks for phones

  • Extra extension cords and surge protectors

  • small generator that actually operated our garage fridge and charged lots.
  • Charge all devices before storm…..don't forget your Kindle.

Warmth + Comfort

  • Extra blankets in the family room and bedrooms. Also love this fleece one in a twin.

  • Cozy socks + layered pajamas for everyone

  • Hand warmers (the little disposable packs)

  • A good old-fashioned “pile everything on the bed” nap plan

  • 32 Degrees makes great long underwear.

Food and Kitchen

  • Easy meals that don’t require much cooking

  • Shelf-stable snacks (crackers, peanut butter, granola bars)

  • Bottled water + a few gallons of drinking water

  • Soup ingredients (because soup fixes everything)

  • Luckily, our stove has a gas cooktop. We are able to still use that in the event of a power outage.

  • I plan to try homemade stovetop popcorn
  • We will also try grilling frozen pizzas.
  • We purchased a French Press to make coffee on the stove. You could also warm up water on the grill to use in a French press.

What I'm Reading

I love to read AND listen to books. If you are looking for a way to get more steps in with your walking…..listen to books! You will want to keep walking to listen. I also listen while doing chores around the house. I will use my earbuds while walking, While in the house I will use a Bluetooth speaker that I can carry around with me or our Alexa.

I read actual printed books as well as on Kindle. I prefer my Kindle, but holding a real book occasionally is nice.

I've had my Audible membership for a while, and LOVE it! It gives me one book credit per month.

Let me share how I read on Kindle and listen to books. Get yourself a library card!

Then add the LIBBY and HOOPLA apps to your phone.

I will typically check to see if a book is available there first before using my credit or buying. Using these 2 apps with your library card is FREE!!! I love FREE.

There may be a waitlist if it is a newer title or popular. That's ok. Sometimes the wait can be lengthy. If I'm not willing to wait, I will just purchase. If it is new or popular, you NEED to finish the book in the allowed checkout time. Sometimes you can renew, and sometimes you may have to get back in the queue. If that happens, when it is available again… it will download where you left off.

Get in the habit of always carrying a book with you to get in a little extra time. That way, if you are waiting at the doctor's office or to get your car serviced, you are prepared!

It was my goal to read more than 12 books last year, and I completed that task. Check out that list, which has been updated with my thoughts on the books. Here is my list for 2024. This is the list of definites for the year. I have a goal of 36 books this year. I will sprinkle in lots of audiobooks as well. Here is an update for 2024.

  • We Are All Guilty Here (currently listening)
  • The First Time I Saw Him (next read) This is book 2. Read The Last Thing He Told Me first. Book 1 was an Apple TV series starring Jennifer Gardner. It was really good, and has a season 2 starting in February. I love seeing books that I read turned into movies and TV shows.
  • Speaking of books that I have read, going to the big screen: The Housemaid did not disappoint! On a whim, I went to the local movie theater solo to watch it. It is set up for a 2nd movie, so hopefully the movie franchise will continue. I am looking forward to reading the 2nd book installment, The Housemaid's Secret.
  • My sweet friend, Jennifer, from City Farmhouse, has her very first book published! I have received an advance copy. If you like a little romance along with home remodel and decorating taking place at the coast….you will love The Summer I Found You!!!! I am currently reading it as well. It will be released on April 7th, and you can preorder it.

What We've Bought

  • I decided to add just a touch of Valentine's Day decor with these items: Gold Heart Hands, rattan hearts, and rattan heart ornaments.
  • Cute lavender neck scarf
  • Crocs for my husband that run a little more narrow. Not as wide as the traditional Crocs. He just needed these to go to the hot tub.
  • TV mount that requires NO studs. It is fabulous and so easy to hang.
  • Olay body wash and lotion
  • I am going to try making popcorn on the stove in my Dutch oven. I'll report back! Lots of how-to videos on Instagram and TikTok.
  • I am going to try the viral Halara jeans. They are affordable, and the reviews are fantastic. I got them in this style and this style. It takes them a bit to arrive. I am anxiously waiting! I already have 2 pairs of their black pants that I love to travel with. I wear these on the plane and these for sightseeing with sneakers and change shoes for dinner.
  • We were having trouble hearing the front center channel from our family room stereo system while watching TV. I researched and was able to replace the one speaker! This is not a soundbar, but a center channel speaker for spoken audio.
  • I juice a lot of citrus by hand. My hubby gave me this electric juicer for Christmas. It works so well!!!

What Caught My Eye

I really enjoy this European fashion account. I consider her classic with an edge. It's a great account to inspire you to put together outfits from your closet.

This account is absolutely stunning for vintage and collected interiors. I adore every shot!

As always, thank you for spending a little piece of your weekend here with me. Saturdays on the Porch has become one of my favorite little traditions—just a cozy place to share life as it’s happening, one week at a time. We’ll be hunkering down tonight and keeping a close eye on the weather as this ice storm moves in. I’m hoping it ends up being mild, but we’re as prepared as we can be, and I’ll be grateful for a warm home, a stocked pantry, and all the cozy comforts if the lights do go out. Wishing you a safe, warm weekend… and I’ll see you right back here next Saturday. 💛

  1. I love your Saturdays on the Porch and really miss them when you take a break. I am going to give the Crocs a try, since I have narrow feet. Also, love the tiger sweater. I think it’s perfect for LSU fans too!

    1. Aww, thank you! I love hearing that! I am going to try to get back to consistent posting. This post takes a lot of work, and I need to start first of the week on it. LOL! I hope you like the Crocs. My husband’s came in and they fit him. Yes, perfect LSU colors!

    1. Thanks, Jane! Y’all stay safe. This is shaping up to be a nasty storm. I really dislike losing power. Been making bread and cooked a soup that will be easy to warm up.

I love hearing from you!
