My Favorite Thrift Store Decor Makeovers from the Year

One of my greatest joys in decorating our home is weaving in pieces that have a story — treasures found at thrift stores, Facebook Marketplace gems, and vintage items that bring instant character. These are the details that give a home that effortless, collected-over-time charm we all love. If you’re drawn to a classic, cozy Nancy Meyers aesthetic or lean toward a grandmillennial style with layers of pattern and personality, incorporating secondhand finds is truly the secret sauce.

This year, our team has shared so many inspiring transformations. I’m highlighting one favorite project from each member — the kinds of makeovers that prove you don’t need a big budget to create a beautiful home. Below, you’ll also find the full link-up of all the fabulous budget-friendly decor updates we completed over the year.

And remember: not every makeover needs to be elaborate. Sometimes it’s as simple as a fresh coat of paint, a new shade, or reviving a tired finish. The magic is in the refresh. The best part? You get to enjoy a piece you rescued, revived, and kept out of the landfill — all while saving money and adding one more meaningful layer to your home.

Asian Brass Lamp Makeover with DIY Pleated Shade

guest bedroom with florals and wicker

Hands down, this pair of Asian brass lamps is one of my favorite thrift store finds of all time. When I discovered them, they were missing their shades and showed a bit of age, but the beautiful brass detailing immediately caught my eye. I knew they had so much potential!

For this project, I created custom pleated fabric lampshades to complement their classic shape and give them a charming, collected feel. The transformation completely elevated the lamps while still honoring their vintage character. They now add such warmth and personality to our home — the perfect blend of traditional style and grandmillennial flair.

Projects like this remind me why I love incorporating secondhand pieces into our decor. With a little creativity and a simple refresh, something forgotten can become a meaningful treasure in your home.

Transform an Old Garden Planter into a High-End Knockoff

This project is such a wonderful example of how a simple, overlooked piece can become something truly beautiful. Starting with an old planter, Kristin completely transformed it with a little cleaning, fresh paint, and thoughtful styling. The end result looks so high-end, yet the makeover is incredibly budget-friendly. It’s the perfect reminder that with a bit of creativity, secondhand finds can add style and charm to any outdoor space. See all of Kristin's favorites from My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia HERE.

Pedestal Drop-Leaf Table Makeover

This pedestal drop-leaf table makeover is such a charming and practical transformation. I love small tables like this — especially drop-leaf styles that offer so much flexibility. They’re wonderful for tight spaces and perfect for a quick game of cards, a cozy puzzle session, or adding an extra surface when you need it. Gail brought this piece back to life beautifully, showing how a simple refresh can make a classic, multifunctional table shine again. See all of Gail's favorites from My Repurposed Life.

Upcycled Antique Thrift Store Radio Table

This upcycled antique radio table is such a great example of how small pieces can make a big impact. Tables like this are incredibly versatile — easy to move from room to room and endlessly useful. With just a few simple steps, she transformed this vintage find into a functional and charming accent piece once again. It’s a wonderful reminder that even the most humble thrifted items can shine with a little creativity and care. Visit all of Suzanne's favorites at Shop at Blu.

Thrifted Vintage Artwork Upcycle

I absolutely adore thrifted art makeovers — I have so many on the blog myself — and this project is such a charming example. Kim took a vintage print and gave it a fresh, updated look with a simple but thoughtful approach. It’s amazing how a small tweak can breathe new life into artwork and make it feel perfectly at home in today’s decor. This idea works beautifully with this piece and is so inspiring for anyone wanting to personalize their walls on a budget. Visit all of Kim's favorites at Exquisitely Unremarkable.
