Painted Stripe Basket Makeover

Painted Stripe Basket Makeover

Making over thrift store items has been one of my favorite pastimes through the years. It's an affordable way to add some character and on trend items to your home without a huge commitment.

I've found that I like to change things up often in our home. I love to “shop” our home to redecorate different rooms and spaces. Thrift store items are the perfect fit for this. So many of my accessories are thrift store makeovers and quite versatile. I've also even re-donated items that I've made over. If it's run its course in our home, I'll donate it to add something new. I don't feel bad about it because the investment and time were typically minimal to begin with.

This month's thrift store makeover is this cool laundry basket. It's not huge and perfect for Ashlyn's bedroom. She took her old basket to her apartment in Clemson and left it there since she'll be living in the same apartment at Clemson next year. Baskets are perfect paint makeovers especially with stripes!

Be sure to read to the end of the post for the complete list of projects this month from the Thrift Store Decor Team!

This basket was just made for painted stripes! I decided to make the center panel gray.

You'll tape off the gray area once it is dry and finish with the white spray paint.

Materials

  • gray spray paint
  • white spray paint
  • spray paint nozzle
  • painters tape
  • scrap paper
  • risers for the basket to lift off ground
  • drop cloth

Instructions

  1. clean and dust your basket
  2. decide where you want the stripe to be
  3. spray just that area with the gray
  4. make sure you overlap the gray a bit onto the area where the white will be
  5. let this dry completely and then some
  6. you want the gray dry before you tape it off
  7. to avoid using excess tape, I folded over some printer paper and placed in the center of the stripe. Then tape it to the basket
  8. spray as many coats as needed to cover your basket
  9. I sprayed 2 coats
  10. this paint dries quickly
  11. remove the paper and tape
  12. enjoy

I photographed it here, but I plan to use it in Ashlyn's bedroom for her laundry. I wasn't able to photograph in her room. I forgot that she had a test today online and was in her room.

I like the idea of a similar basket down here to put a few exercise equipment pieces. It would also be great for blanket storage.

  2. I swear, it was MEANT for a stripey makeover with the way the weaving is- such a perfect way to transform it. And hallelujah for having a thrift store stash to keep us busy these days.

I love hearing from you!
