Saturdays on the Porch #43

Happiest of Saturdays to you all!

I can't believe that it has been about a month since the last Saturdays on the Porch.

June was a bit nuts with getting ready for our long-awaited trip to France with our family, two weeks in France and then the recovery once home. LOL!

I don't think that I've ever washed so much laundry!

Ashlyn washed her own clothes, but I washed ours and surprised Woods with his clothes washed. We arrived home at 10pm, and he had to get up the next morning and go to work.

I also had to wash all the blankets that I used to cover our bed and the recliners in our room. We made the decision to leave Bentley and Jack at home. We hired our 14-year-old neighbor to come throughout the day to take care of them. She did a fabulous job and was the best decision for them. They were much happier.

We are back home and settled. I am now ready to get back to work…..as much as I can with a wedding coming up next Saturday. Yes, Woods and Morgan get married next Saturday near Charlotte, NC. He's moving a lot of things out today to their new apartment. I've got all the emotions going on. He's going to keep living here until next Friday and stay in the guest room.

This dress was an unexpected last-minute find before leaving for France.

I was in Belk getting a couple of things and saw this dress in the junior department. Since junior sizing is usually small and short, I decided to try on a large. Glad I did. I wanted the extra length.

Would you believe that my favorite black dress that I got last year from Target has disappeared? How in the world does that happen?? I wanted a new replacement. This came in at $16.99. Even if it lasts one season, I'll get my money's worth.

It's really cute dressed up with sandals or down with sneakers.

Fit Tip: Size up in the dress. I got large. It is short but ok for a summer day dress. I LOVE these sandals. They are true to size with a low heel. I love them so much that I have them in black and tan as well. Ashlyn also has them in black.

I wore this dress several times in France. Here we are in the countryside. It was HOT!!! Several days were over 100 degrees!

These taupe, gold metallic walking sandals are perfect! They are so comfortable and went with everything. I walked many miles in them with no foot pain or blisters.

Fit Tip on the Walking Sandal: I originally ordered these in my usual size 8. They fit well but felt like they would be too tight if my feet swelled with the heat. They are more on the narrow side. I sent them back and exchanged them for a half size up to 8.5. This was the perfect fit so size up 1/2 size.

I'll be sharing lots of France photos soon!

Before France, we picked up Ashlyn's wedding dress in Georgia. We left it with our local seamstress to do the very minimal alterations. Would you believe that the only thing that had to be done was to add cups to the bust and stitch in the bustling! I guess that the big plus of being six feet tall and very slim. The dress looks like it was custom-made for her figure. She is going to be a stunning bride!

This week, she met her fiance in Greenville for dinner, and they went by White House Black Market to look at a dress that I found for her online for their rehearsal dinner in September. She wanted to try it on in person.

Originally, she had her heart set on a jumpsuit that we saw in Dillard's last fall when she first got engaged. Jumpsuits can be tricky for a slim, six-foot girl. We just haven't found the one. I suggested that we start looking at dresses as well. She loved this one, and it fit her perfectly! It's a plus that it is not too short on her. It will be here next week and can't wait to take some better photos of it for you. It's gorgeous!

I ordered it online because I had a coupon as a new customer. Use this link to get your own $20 off coupon.

She looked at the jewelry and purchased this layered pearl bracelet to wear with it. Honestly, she will get a lot of wear out of it. I plan to order myself one. It's beautiful and has a magnetic clasp which makes it so simple to put on.

In the Kitchen

Yummy salmon cobb salad from this cookbook.

The carrots are from the same cookbook. The shrimp and scallops were grilled on a grill pan.

brie and rose

We had a family dinner this week. An easy appetizer that looks like a million bucks is a brie wedge.

brie with cracker

Spread apricot jam or preserves on top and drizzle with honey!

What I'm Reading

I love to read AND listen to books. If you are looking for a way to get more steps in with your walking…..listen to books! You will want to keep walking to listen. I also listen while doing chores around the house. I will use my earbuds while walking, While in the house I will use a Bluetooth speaker that I can carry around with me or our Alexa.

I read actual printed books as well as on Kindle. I prefer my Kindle, but it is nice to hold a real book occasionally.

I've had my Audible membership for a while, and LOVE it! It gives me one book credit per month.

Let me share with you how I read on Kindle and listen to books as well. Get yourself a library card!

Then add the LIBBY and HOOPLA apps to your phone.

I will typically check to see if a book is available there first before using my credit or buying. Using these 2 apps with your library card is FREE!!! I love FREE.

There may be a waitlist if it is a newer title or popular. That's ok. Sometimes the wait can be lengthy. If I'm not willing to wait, I will just purchase. If it is new or popular, you NEED to finish the book in the allowed checkout time. Sometimes you can renew, and sometimes you may have to get back in the queue. If that happens, when it is available again…..it will download where you left off.

Get in the habit of always carrying a book with you to get in a little extra time. That way if you are waiting at the doctor's office or to get your car serviced….you are prepared!

It was my goal to read more than 12 books last year, and I completed that task. Check out that list which has been updated with my thoughts on the books. Here is my list for 2024. This is the list of definites for the year. I have a goal of 36 books this year. I will sprinkle in lots of audiobooks as well.

What We've Bought

I got the Hoka sneakers for Mother's Day specifically for travel. They are chunky sneakers, but you feel like you are walking on clouds! They are worth it!

Critters in the Yard

Deer sightings in the yard are common. It never gets old. We always get excited when we see them.

This week we had a new guest in the backyard…..a groundhog. Isn't he adorable? Hopefully, he won't make a home in the backyard. He has been going out there at night some because there have been wet footprints on the outdoor cushions. I think Jack and Bentley will keep him from burrowing out there.

What Caught My Eye

Ashlyn loves this look for her rehearsal dinner tables. It is from a local company that does beautiful work. She is going to work with Tim's mom to go there to check them out!

This is one of my favorite accounts for classic, style!

Gorgeous European kitchen!!!

Absolutely dreamy outdoor setting!

I started playing around with ideas for next week's rehearsal dinner.

I hope you have a fabulous weekend!!! XO, Christy

  1. I love the rehearsal dress. So elegant. Don’ think a jumpsuit could beat that. Also, I love your hair. The natural silver around your face is beautiful. I think it actually makes you look younger. Just say’in. 😉 Blessings, Sharon

    1. You are so very sweet! Thank you so much. You made my day! I needed to hear that after a friend was basically appalled by my hair and felt I would regret it if I didn’t color it for the wedding. My husband and kids were both there when these words were said and took up for my choice saying they all loved it. Thank you!!!

  2. Love your blog! How do you keep the deer from eating your hydrangeas?? They’ve devoured all of ours!!

    1. Thank you so much!!! So sweet of you. We have so many deer. I probably shouldn’t say this because now they will…LOL! BUT they never touch the hydrangeas. They eat the mess out of my impatients, but the deer spray repellent has helped.

I love hearing from you!
